Lorex Motion Detection Too Sensitive – 8 Methods To Fix!
Solution #1: Tweak The Motion Detection
Is your Lorex motion detection sensitivity too high? Fortunately, Lorex cameras are associated with the app, through which you can configure a handful of settings, including the detection sensitivity.
When it is too high, try putting it to the minimum.
Here is how you can do it:
- Open the Lorex Home app.
- Look for the Devices screen.
- Tap on the three dots.
- Click on “Motion Detection Settings.”
- Ensure the option is enabled.
- Go to “Smart Sensitivity.”
- Click on “1.”
- Save.
Once changed to 1, you should monitor the detection for the next minutes or hours. You should receive fewer unimportant notifications.
Solution #2: Choose Your Preferred Settings
Perhaps the detection sensitivity is already low, but you keep receiving notifications you don’t want.
In that case, it is necessary to check the advanced detection settings on the Lorex Home app.
Those will allow you to receive only notifications for events you deem valuable to learn about.
- Open the Lorex Home app.
- Look for the Devices screen.
- Tap on the three dots.
- Click on “Motion Detection Settings.”
- Toggle on or off any settings you wish.
Here are the settings available for most Lorex Wi-Fi cameras:
- Outdoor Mode – This mode might seem redundant with other settings. Still, it should capture general movement in the area and notify you about it.
- Person detection – The camera’s AI will know when a person passes by and send you a notification (in addition to recording it).
- Vehicle detection – The system will detect vehicles crossing past to record and notify your app.
Adjust The Cool Down
In addition to the settings discussed above, there is the “Smart Detection Cool Down.”
It is defaulted to 30 seconds, meaning you should not receive a notification less than 30 seconds after the last one.
If you are annoyed with an excessive notification volume in a short period, perhaps changing the cool-down time is the way to go.
You might want to stretch it as much as possible.
While you also tweak the other settings, you should get a satisfactory experience.
Solution #3: Check The Motion Detection’s Lights
Suppose you are using the camera at night and receiving too many notifications.
In that case, that can be due to some settings on the associated lights.
Perhaps the lights illuminate an area with irrelevant movement, and the camera picks it up.
Assessing the light’s settings goes like this:
- Open the Lorex Home app.
- Look for the Devices screen.
- Tap on the three dots.
- Click on “Motion Detection Settings.”
- Tap on “Light Settings.”
- Go to “Deterrence light” or “Smart lightning.”
- Disable the deterrence light if you are receiving too many false alerts.
Alternatively, you might enable the deterrence light but select different “Smart lighting modes.” You can configure them to find one which is not so sensitive to motion.
Solution #4: Adjust The Motion Zones
Another setting you must watch on your camera settings concerns the motion zones.
Every smart Wi-Fi camera that counts with detection has a setting that allows you to decide where the camera should focus.
That will help tell the system which type of motion is important and which isn’t.
Here is how to set the motion zones:
- Open the Lorex Home app.
- Look for the Devices screen.
- Tap on the three dots.
- Click on “Motion Detection Settings.”
- Click on “Motion Zones“.
Change The Configurations
Each camera you have will display a motion zone corresponding to the current captured area.
Suppose all the motion zone has a blue filter. In that case, the entire area is subject to recording and triggering the camera’s detection.
If you want to change that:
- Tap on “Clear” or “Erase.”
- With “Erase,” deselect the area you think the camera doesn’t need to cover.
- If you select “Clear,” all will be deselected.
- You can use your fingers to select only the area meant to be surveilled.
Only the area covered by the blue filter is monitored by your camera.
You can still see the rest on the live feed, but you won’t receive notifications based on it.
Tip: You can access the customized options of each motion zone and select whether you want them to detect general, people-only, or vehicle-only movements. That will help with false alerts.
Solution #5: Delete The Camera On The App
Your camera or app may have glitched slightly. Because of that, the system is notifying you more than it should.
One quick way of working around that is deleting the camera from the app and adding it again.
Note that you must again configure all of the above (solutions #1 to #4).
- Open the Lorex Home app.
- Look for the Devices screen.
- Tap the camera you are having trouble with.
- Select “Remove“.
How To Add The Camera Again?
Perhaps you don’t remember how the process works if you’ve had your camera for a long time.
So here are the steps to add the Lorex camera to the Lorex Home app:
- Open the Lorex Home app.
- Look for the Devices screen.
- Tap the “+” sign.
- Scan your device’s QR code or manually type its ID.
- Ensure you can hear the camera’s startup chime and its light is flashing green.
- Connect the camera to your Wi-Fi network.
- Set up a password for your camera.
- Wait for the camera’s light to become solid green.
Once you have done the above, you must go to the detection settings discussed in solutions #1 to #4.
Set them all to the lowest and see how the device’s system behaves.
Solution #6: Change Your Camera’s Location/Angle
After all the above, there are still some things you can try. Perhaps your camera is in a place where too much movement occurs all the time.
Even with low settings, it might be unavoidable to receive excessive notifications.
Then you can try any of the below:
1. Physically change the angle of your camera. Check its installation and tweak it a little so it doesn’t focus on a place where many people or cars go by all the time. You can use the app’s live view to check how it looks.
2. Alternatively, or in addition to the above, you can use the motion zone settings to “turn off” detection for a part of the covered area. Then, you can keep checking it visually but will not receive as many notifications.
3. A more radical approach is uninstalling the camera from its current place and installing it somewhere else. It might be in the same area but a little further.
Solution #7: Check For A Firmware Update
Is Lorex camera motion detection too sensitive? Moreover, your camera might need a firmware update.
Its excessive or false alerts might be caused by an incompatibility between the current app version and the outdated camera’s firmware version.
As long as both are still connected, you can update by doing the following:
- Open the Lorex Home app.
- Look for the Devices screen.
- Select the camera you need to check.
- Tap on its firmware info.
- Check if there is an available firmware.
- Install it.
After that, check how the motion detection behaves.
Solution #8: Reset The Camera
Finally, we can attribute the glitch to a deep failure in your camera’s system.
Before returning or replacing it, you should try resetting it to the factory default.
Note that the method below applies to Wi-Fi cameras that use a battery.
- Find the reset button on the camera’s back.
- Hold the reset button for 10 seconds.
- Wait for the chime sound.
- A green LED should flash.
The green LED must flash and not stay solid. If it stays solid it is an indication of failure to reset its firmware.
