Sometimes, the Lorex audio not working will prevent you from noting important things!
Lorex provides a complete surveillance environment with NVR/DVR recorders, wired or wireless cameras, and proprietary apps.
But those are not enough if audio is not transmitted from your camera to your monitor or app.
Fixing the Lorex cameras without audio requires checking configurations on the recorder and app, such as the audio channels, audio encoding, and even basic transmission settings. Moreover, you should check for firmware updates or try resetting the cameras.
Below are all the solutions to make your Lorex system transmit audio again!
Lorex Audio Not Working – Learn 8 Easy Solutions
Solution #1: Check The Monitor Full Screen Modes
Whenever you use the Lorex recorder (NVR or DVR) to check your cameras, you can only listen to the camera’s audio when you activate the full screen.
Thus, to check for any audio issues, you must go through the audio modes in full screen.
Here is what you need to do:
- Locate the cameras on the recorder’s system.
- Select the “Fullscreen” option.
- Click on the “Channel Select” icon.
- Switch between audio channels to see if things change.
Also, you must pay attention to a very small thing: whether the camera’s audio is unmuted.
You can see the mute/unmute icon on the screen.
Solution #2: Power Cycle The Lorex Camera
Is the Lorex camera audio not working? That might happen due to a small hardware failure that should be fixed upon power cycling your camera.
The power cycling process will differ according to your camera type.
For Wi-Fi Models
Here is how you can easily restore audio to your camera:
- Remove the camera from its stand.
- Twist the battery cover clockwise.
- Remove the cover and the battery.
- Wait up to 5 minutes.
- Insert the battery again.
Once the battery is inserted again, you should ensure it turns on. Then, check on the app or recorder if you can hear sound from its live footage.
For Ethernet Models
Some Lorex cameras use Power over Ethernet.
Because of that, their power cycling works slightly differently:
- Turn off the camera.
- Disconnect the Ethernet cable.
- Wait a minute.
- Connect again.
- Turn the camera on.
Solution #3: Ensure The Correct Settings
Are you sure that the basic Lorex audio settings are correct? Once you set the system from scratch, there are a few adjustments you need to make.
Here are the complete steps to ensure that your Lorex camera can transmit audio:
- Confirm your Lorex camera is operational.
- Verify if your Lorex unit supports audio (check the user guide).
- Open the Lorex app.
- Go to Live View.
- Tap “Quick Menu.”
- Choose “Main Menu.”
Do the following once you are in the main menu:
- Tap the “Camera” icon.
- Navigate to Recording.
- From the channel drop menu, pick the channel linked to your camera.
- Enable sound recording by checking the Audio/Video checkbox.
- Set Audio Encode to “Automatic” and exit the menu.
Perhaps the lack of audio was because you haven’t yet enabled sound recording.
The camera won’t transmit audio if you don’t toggle that option.
Solution #4: Adjust The Audio Encoding
Perhaps the automatic Audio Encode won’t cut it. In that case, it is necessary to tweak that setting.
In case you haven’t had to set everything from scratch recently (and thus haven’t checked Solution #3), here is what you must do:
- Access your Lorex camera’s settings using the monitor.
- Choose the “RECORDING” tab.
- Find the “Audio Encode” setting at the bottom of the page.
- Test each of the available encoding settings by selecting them one by one.
One of the encoding settings available should make the audio work. You might want to check the rest of the solutions below if none does.
Solution #5: Check The Video Standard
Some audio issues on video systems are caused by incorrect video settings/standards.
That is very common on TVs, for example. If you have recently installed, updated, or changed settings on your recorder, the video standard may be incorrect.
Thus, it is not accurately processing audio.
- Go to the DVR’s Main Menu.
- Open the “Camera” section.
- Select “Settings.”
Follow the next steps:
- Identify the camera channel you’re using.
- Find out your camera type (check the box or specs).
- If it’s an AHD camera, mark the “AHD” box for that channel.
- Save the settings.
If your camera is not AHD, check its type and mark the corresponding box. That way, the software will process the video and audio correctly.
Solution #6: Update The Firmware
If you’ve come so far and no solution has worked, it is time to update your firmware.
That could be necessary on the recorder or the Wi-Fi camera. If you have a recorder with plugged-in cameras, it isn’t necessary.
That’s because the cameras work with the recorder seamlessly.
Update The Recorder
Here are the steps to update the recorder firmware:
- Go to Main Menu.
- Click on Settings.
- Locate the “System” option.
- Click on “Upgrade.”
- Locate and click on “Check for Updates“.
If an update is available, simply select to download and install it. Then, wait for the installation to finish. After that, check if the cameras transmit audio.
Tip: You should check for firmware updates once in a while if you don’t receive notifications about them automatically.
Update The Wi-Fi Camera
And these are the steps to update the Wi-Fi camera firmware:
- Open the Lorex Home app.
- Look for the Devices screen.
- Select the camera you need to check.
- Tap on its firmware info.
- Check if there is an available firmware.
- Install it.
Once the update is installed, the Wi-Fi camera should regain its capability to transmit audio to your app.
Solution #7: Restore Recorder To Default Settings
A different alternative is restoring your recorder to its default settings.
That doesn’t imply a factory reset properly, only reverting the settings to optimal functioning.
Perhaps you have tweaked the settings in a way that disrupted the audio transmission software-wise.
Do this:
- Right-click anywhere on the display.
- Choose the “main menu” option.
- Inform your password.
- Select the hammer and screwdriver icon.
- Select the “Settings” option.
- Look for the “Default” option.
- Click on the box that stands for “Factory default.”
- Click on “Apply” and “OK.”
- Wait for the system to restart.
Once the system restarts, you might check if the cameras are on it. If they do, check for audio. You must perform a device search if the cameras do not show up.
Search For Cameras
When the cameras don’t show up, you need to perform a Device Search:
- Go to Live View.
- Right-click on it and open the Main Menu.
- Select “Device Search.”
- Log in with your credentials (they might be in the user guide).
- Check and select the cameras you wish to add to the system.
- Click on “Add” and wait for the status indicator to turn green.
- Click “OK” to save all changes.
Next, check if the cameras you just set up are transmitting audio.
Solution #8: Reset The Camera
Finally, the audio issue could be on the camera’s hardware or firmware. The method to deal with that is resetting the device.
Unfortunately, its info will be lost whether on the app or recorder. It will force you to set the device up again later.
Ethernet Cameras
The wired cameras are connected to the recorder directly.
Here is how you must reset them:
- Ensure your camera is connected to the Recorder via Ethernet.
- Locate the reset button on the camera (usually on the back).
- Hold the button for a while.
- Disconnect and connect the Ethernet cable while you press the button.
- Hold for at least 15 seconds before releasing.
Once you reset the camera, you must perform a Device Search again and add it to the recorder.
Reset Wi-Fi Cameras
Wi-Fi cameras, on the other hand, must be reset following these steps:
- Find the reset button on the camera’s back.
- Hold the reset button for 10 seconds.
- Wait for the chime sound.
- A green LED should flash.
If the reset is successful, you must add the device to the app again. It should transmit audio now. If it doesn’t, the camera is defective.
Quick Recap
Incorrect configurations in your recorder system or app can cause Lorex audio not to work.
That is a relief because you will not need a new camera. So remember to keep your devices updated all the time!
