There are many reasons why you might need to know how to sneak past Ring doorbell in your lifetime.

Maybe you’re out past curfew, and you’re trying not to alert your parents to your mistake, or you don’t want your roommates to know you ordered an armful of pizza at 2 a.m.

These smart doorbell cameras have become popular for apartments, condos, and single-family homes.

This is due to their superior motion detection capabilities and the quick mobile notification features they provide for homeowners.

Method 1: Turn Off the Camera

They say the most obvious solutions are the simplest ones. In the case of Method number 1 for sneaking past a Ring doorbell, this is most definitely the case.

If you have access to the Ring doorbell’s power and app, turning the doorbell off temporarily is an effective way to get past the camera without it seeing you.

Step #1. Lowering the Sensivity

To turn off the Ring doorbell, start by lowering the camera’s motion sensitivity:

  1. Login to the Ring app on your cell phone or mobile device.
  2. Tap on Devices.
  3. Select Motion Settings.
  4. Toggle the visible slider to the left to lower the motion detection sensitivity.
  5. Click Save.

Step #2. Turn off Motion Alerts

You will then need to turn off the motion alerts. To do this, you must:

  1. Go back to the Motion Settings page and select the motion schedule.
  2. Adjust the date and times the camera will be on or off or turn the motion alerts off entirely.
  3. Click Save.

Step #3. Turn off Camera

Finally, to turn the camera and its recording features off entirely, you have to turn off the camera’s Motion Record Control.

Do this by:

  1. Access the Ring app via your phone or PC.
  2. Select the Ring device you want to turn off.
  3. Click Motion Record.
  4. Turn off.
  5. Click Save.

If you follow the above steps, the camera should be entirely turned off.

It is important to note that anyone with access to the app can see that it is off and turn it back on if the ring doorbell is off.

However, as long as you sneak past the doorbell quickly, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Alternatively, you could simply turn off the Wi-Fi. However, depending on the type of Ring doorbell, this may not be enough.

Furthermore, Wi-Fi jammers that interrupt the Ring doorbell’s Wi-Fi signal are illegal and can result in fines and jail time if you’re caught using them.

Method 2: Cover the Ring Camera with a Physical Object

If you’re in a pinch and need to sneak past your Ring doorbell without being detected, covering the doorbell camera with a physical object is quick and effective.

Objects you could place in front of over the camera include:

  • A piece of tape.
  • A paper or plastic bag.
  • A piece of cardstock or thick paper.
  • A scrap of fabric.
  • A home decor item.

Of course, if not done carefully, the Ring camera will pick up on you placing something over it, record you doing it, and then send a notification via the app to the account owners.

To avoid this, you can wear a disguise or cover your face while covering up the camera. Alternatively, you could cover the camera from behind.

It may be preferable to open the front door and remain on the threshold while you reach over to cover the doorbell. The app will pick up your hand but not your face.

Method 3: Stand in Front of the Ring Doorbell

If you’re trying to sneak someone in past a Ring doorbell, you could always just stand in front of it.

This method will trigger the motion detector and record the event. However, if you live at the residence, anyone who receives the app notification will recognize you.

You, after all, are allowed to be in your own home.

Voices will also be recorded during these events, so you may need to talk while you’re sneaking someone in or play music to garble the audio recording.

Method 4: Cut the Power to the Camera

If you’re not satisfied with the above methods of sneaking past a Ring doorbell, it may be best for you to cut the power to the camera entirely.

This method will require a little work and preparation on your part.

  1. Start by turning off the breaker the Ring doorbell is on. This will cut the power supply to the doorbell.
  2. Using a screwdriver, remove the doorbell from the front of the house.
  3. Disconnect the wires to the doorbell.
  4. Replace the doorbell, so it looks like it’s operating as normal.

Be careful not to damage the doorbell when you remove it or leave signs of evident tampering.

Method 5: Disable Motion Zones

Thanks to their online, mobile formats and simple interface, Ring doorbells are pretty user-friendly.

In addition to turning off the camera’s motion sensitivity and motion recording, you can also easily limit or disable the camera’s motion zones.

Doing this will allow you to keep anyone with access to the account from getting suspicious by keeping the camera turned on but disabling certain areas of the camera’s focus.

To turn off the motion zones on your Ring doorbell:

  1. Open the Ring app on your phone or PC.
  2. Select Devices and choose the doorbell you want to edit.
  3. Select Motion Settings.
  4. Select Motion Zones.
  5. Disable the motion zones you want to turn off.
  6. Select Continue.
  7. Select Save.

Another option is to simply edit the motion zones by following these same steps, making it smaller or adjusting the zone shape to make it easier to sneak around.

Method 6: Share the Doorbell’s Account Information

This method for sneaking past a Ring doorbell is one that many people don’t think about.

If you’ve ever had someone house sit or pet sit for you, you’ve likely given them access to your Ring doorbell account to help them keep an eye on things.

Unless you’ve had the foresight to change the password upon your return, that individual will still have access to your account.

Not only that, but they can turn the camera and motion detection settings on or off.

They can also see anyone who comes to your door and track if you’ve left your home or not.

If you’re looking to keep things secure after you’ve given someone your Ring doorbell account information to avoid them sneaking past it in the future, make sure you change your username and password as appropriate.
