Sometimes, the Wyze Camera won’t reset. What to do then?
Wyze offers a full range of cameras and associated devices to help you with home surveillance and security.
But when the device fails, you will want to reset and set it up from scratch. However, what to do when that method doesn’t work?
If your Wyze Camera can’t reset, you need to assess its firmware by updating it through the app or the SD card. Alternatively, the issue might be somewhere in the network settings or the SD card you’ve been using.
Check below all the methods you must employ to solve the problem!
Wyze Camera won’t Reset – 9 Ways To Workaround That!
Solution #1: Update The Firmware (Via App)
Although you are probably trying to reset the camera because of a firmware issue, you must sometimes update it before resetting.
As weird as it sounds, the camera might fail to reset if the latest firmware is not installed.
Thus, you will need to follow these steps:
- Open the Wyze app.
- Tap Home.
- Go to the Wyze Cam Outdoor.
- Click the Settings icon (top right).
- Tap Device Info.
- Go to “Firmware Version.”
- Check if there is an Update button.
Click on the “Update” button and wait for the process to finish. Once the camera is updated, proceed with the resetting procedure.
Solution #2: Update The Firmware Manually
Perhaps the issue is a firmware issue, but updating through the app is not possible for some reason.
In that case, it is recommended to update manually, which is also called “flash the firmware.” You will use your SD card for that.
Do the following:
- Go to the Wyze Release Notes page.
- Download the file corresponding to your camera model.
- Move the file to your SD card.
- Power the camera off.
- Insert the SD card into it.
- Hold the setup button.
- Plug the USB cable.
- Release the setup button when the red and blue LEDs appear and stay solid.
The updating process will take up to 4 minutes. Once done, the device will restart, and the light status will change through it.
Solution #3: Delete The Device On The App
Now the next solution on how to reset the Wyze camera. If you’ve had success updating the camera’s firmware, it should be completely responsive to the app.
Thus, you can use the app to help you in the resetting process. A good method for resetting is using both the app and the physical procedure.
Removing from the app goes like this:
- Open the Wyze app.
- Go to the Devices.
- Select the Wyze camera you want to delete/reset.
- Check its Device Settings.
- Click on “Delete Device.”
After deleting the device correctly, resetting it should prove easy.
Solution #4: Ensure The Correct Wi-Fi Frequency
Okay, that might sound odd since you want to delete/reset the device.
However, is the reason you want it because the camera hasn’t been working? That is probably due to using the wrong frequency!
Moreover, even resetting it can not work when using the wrong frequency.
- While the app is open and your camera is active, go to the Wi-Fi settings on your phone.
- Switch from a 5GHz network to a 2.4GHz one.
- Try communicating with the camera from the app.
- See if anything has changed.
You should see a change in responsiveness. Perhaps you will no longer need to reset the camera.
Or if the glitches were unrelated to the frequency, now you can reset and reconnect to the app because you are using the correct frequency.
Note: Wyze and many other smart cameras can only use the 2.4GHz frequency. Brands employ that because 2.4GHz's range is wider than 5GHz's.
Solution #5: Remove The SD Card
Depending on your camera’s model, perhaps removing the SD card is not an obvious step when resetting it.
However, the instructions for the resetting procedure require it. If you haven’t removed the SD card, that’s why you can’t reset the camera.
Here is how to do it:
- Locate where the SD card is inserted.
- Push it carefully using your thumb, fingernail, or a flat object.
- Wait to hear or feel a “click.”
- Now, pull it from the camera.
Only after that can you reset the camera. Now, the process should go smoothly.
Solution #6: Check If Your SD Card Is Corrupted
A corrupted SD card could make it harder to manage the Wyze camera, including times when you need to reset it.
So, you will do two things: check the SD card on the app and your computer.
That way, you can assure whether it is corrupted or has any other issue.
- Open the Wyze app on your phone or other smart device.
- Locate the camera you want to access.
- Click on its “Settings.”
- Go to “Advanced settings.”
- Head to “Manage SD Card.”
Check if all the regular options or an error message pops up. If all is fine with your camera, no error message will appear.
Use Your Computer
Next, it is time to use your computer to check for issues on the SD card.
Computers usually tell the user if there is an issue on an external device right when you plug it in.
- Remove the SD card from the camera.
- Insert it into your computer’s SD card slot.
- Wait for the system to notify you about the card.
- Check if you can access the SD card’s files normally.
If you can navigate through the SD card’s files and folders without a problem, then the SD card is perfectly fine.
Otherwise, the computer would highlight an issue and require you to format the card.
Solution #7: Clear The App Cache
Perhaps you are trying to solve the issue through the app, but there is no communication between it and the device.
One thing that triggers that sometimes is the cache data collected by the app. The app cache is intended to help the app run better but can also backfire.
So it is time to clear those data:
- Open your Android phone’s settings.
- Locate the “Applications” tab.
- Click on the Wyze app.
- Tap on its “Storage.”
- Click on “Clear Cache.”
After that, restart the app and see if anything has changed.
Solution #8: Use An Optimal DNS
The DNS on your router is another reason the connection between the app and camera is flimsy, causing many glitches and even a reset failure.
While some devices might not care about the DNS configured to your router, others are very sensitive.
The wrong DNS will cause route blocks, so the data is not transmitted correctly.
- Locate your router’s label to learn its IP address.
- Insert its IP address into a web browser.
- Log into it.
- Check its settings and locate the DNS settings.
- Ensure that the DNS settings are set up for the optimal addresses.
These are the optimal DNS addresses:
- Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8.
- Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4.
If the current configuration differs, just change it and save the settings. If it is “Automatic,” change it to “Manual” and enter the addresses above.
Solution #9: Go For The Physical Method
Suppose all of the above is fine, and you have updated the camera and made sure the DNS and Wi-Fi frequency are well set up.
Then, you should go for the physical resetting procedure. That implies resetting the buttons on your camera after you have already deleted the device from the app.
- If you have a microSD card on the device, remove it.
- Plug the Wyze Cam into power;
- Keep the setup button below the camera pressed for 10 seconds;
For Wyze Cam v1 only: Press and hold it for 20 seconds.
How Do I Know It’s Been Reset?
When the camera has been fully reset, it will act like the following:
- You must wait over 30 seconds for the device to initiate.
- The LED status light should shift from Solid Yellow to Blinking Yellow (Wyze Cam v3 only: The light will turn red).
- You must set the device from scratch now.
Quick Recap
The Wyze Camera won’t reset when there is a clear issue with the firmware, SD card, or network configurations.
Even though the network shouldn’t be a major concern when resetting, the camera will require the correct settings to connect again!
