Nest Doorbell Not Ringing on Phone – 10 Surefire Solutions

There are several solutions to fix your Nest doorbell not sending alerts to your phone problem.

Some require you to have access to your doorbell, app, phone, and WiFi router.   

#1: Verify the Power Status of Your Doorbell

There are two types of Nest doorbells: battery-powered and wired.

For battery-powered doorbells, ensure they are fully charged. Confirm they receive sufficient voltage and current if wired to a power source. 

To check the power status of your Nest doorbell, follow these steps:

Wired Doorbell

1. Look for the LED indicator on your Nest doorbell.
2. If the LED is illuminated, the doorbell is powered.
3. If the LED is OFF, the doorbell lacks power.

Info: Green LED means your doorbell has enough power, while red LED suggests needing a charge or wiring inspection. 

Battery-powered Doorbell

1. Check the battery level of your Nest doorbell.
2. A low battery level means there’s insufficient power supply. 
3. Replace the battery in your doorbell. 

If you use your doorbell frequently, the battery level will drain more quickly.

Tip: Set up battery notifications in the Nest app to receive notifications when the battery is low.  

#2: Make Sure Your Doorbell is Connected to Your WiFi

Your Nest doorbell must be connected to your WiFi.

If your doorbell is offline or your WiFi has a weak signal, it won’t be able to communicate with your phone and send notifications. 

To check the connection, follow these steps:

1. Open the Nest app.
2. Tap on the Doorbell tab.
3. Tap on the Settings icon (three dots).
4. Tap on WiFi.
5. Your device should be listed under Connected Devices.

Note: If your doorbell is not on the list, it is not connected to your WiFi. 

To establish a connection, follow these steps:

1. Ensure your phone is connected to the same WiFi as the doorbell.
2. Open the Nest app.
3. Tap on the Doorbell tab.
4. Tap on the Get Started button. 
5. Follow the instructions in the app to connect your doorbell to your WiFi. 

Note: Your WiFi network should be on 2.4 GHz and has a strong signal. 

If you have trouble connecting, move your doorbell closer to your router or use a WiFi extender to boost the signal. If this doesn’t work, restart your doorbell or router. 

#3: Disable Quiet Mode on Your Doorbell

Quiet Mode is a feature that allows you to mute the chime of your doorbell for a certain time.

If enabled, your doorbell will not ring, and you will not receive notifications on your phone.

To turn off Quiet Mode on your doorbell, follow these steps:

1. Open the Nest app.
2. Tap on the Doorbell tab.
3. Tap on the Settings icon (three dots).
4. Tap on Quiet Time.
5. Toggle the Quiet Time switch to the OFF position.

#4: Enable Your Doorbell’s Chime Settings

To enable the chime settings on your doorbell and app, follow these steps:

1. Open the Nest app.
2. Tap on the Doorbell tab. 
3. Tap on the Settings icon (three dots).
4. Tap on Chime.
5. Toggle on Ring Indoor Chime. 

Note: If the Ring Indoor Chime is disabled, your doorbell will not ring the chime when someone presses the doorbell button.   

#5: Turn On Notifications for the Nest App

If your Nest doorbell doesn’t ring on phone, check the notifications for the Nest app.

If it’s turned off, you will not receive alerts on your phone.

To turn on the notifications for the Nest app, follow these steps:

Nest App

1. Open the Nest app.
2. Tap on the Doorbell tab.
3. Tap Settings (three dots).
4. Tap on Notifications.
5. Toggle on Allow Notifications.  

Google Home App

1. Open the Google Home App.
2. Tap on the Menu icon (three horizontal lines).
3. Tap Settings.
4. Tap on Notifications.
5. Find the Nest doorbell.
6. Toggle on Allow Notifications.

#6: Disable Do Not Disturb Mode on Your Phone

The Do Not Disturb mode allows you to silence alerts, calls, and notifications for a certain period or when certain conditions are met.

If enabled, you will not get alerts on your phone. Here’s how to turn off the Do Not Disturb mode:

iPhone

1. Swipe down from the top right corner of your display to open Control Center.
2. Tap the moon icon to disable Do Not Disturb.

Android

1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.
2. Tap on the Do Not Disturb icon to turn it off. 

Note: Schedule Do Not Disturb mode to turn on and off automatically at specific times of the day. 

#7: Check Your Doorbell’s Wires

To perform a soft reset on your Nest doorbell, follow these steps:

1. Press and hold the doorbell button for 5 seconds.
2. Wait for your doorbell to beep.
3. Wait for the LED light to flash yellow.
4. Once the LED light turns solid green, the soft reset is complete.

If the problem persists, perform a hard reset by holding the doorbell button for 10 seconds instead of 5 seconds.  

#9: Update Your Doorbell’s Firmware

If your Nest doorbell’s firmware is outdated or buggy, it will cause problems.

Here’s how to do this:

1. Ensure your Nest doorbell is connected to your WiFi.
2. Open the Nest app.

4. Tap Settings (three dots).

2. Locate the Reset button.
3. Press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds using a paperclip or other small objects.
4. Wait for the doorbell to beep.
5. Wait for the LED to flash red.
6. Once the LED turns solid green,  the hard reset is complete.
7. Turn on the power to your doorbell.
8. Follow the instructions to set up your doorbell again.

A hard reset will erase your doorbell’s settings and restore your device to its factory default.
