Why Honeywell Thermostat Says Low Battery With New Batteries?

Finn Wheatley Updated onJanuary 14, 2025
honeywell thermostat says low battery with new batteries

Your Honeywell thermostat says low battery with new batteries and you find yourself looking for a solution?

Luckily for you, the issue is well-known by the community and there are several possible solutions.

If one thing is certain it would be that if your battery is not damaged or worn out, the chances of getting it fixed are high.

If after battery replacement the Honeywell thermostat still shows “Batt Lo” error the issue may not be with the batteries themselves. It could also be a hardware/software malfunction or a temporal power displacement.

If your Thermostat has once died due to low batteries, you might need to perform a factory reset with the new ones so you can get them working.

Before we jump right into the methods to solve the battery error, let’s take a look at why this happens and how you can avoid it in the future.

Why Does My Thermostat Say Low Battery?

Except for the obvious reason, the batteries, the problem is well-known to appear in certain situations.

If there is a glitch, bug, or even a virus in your thermostat’ system, it may display errors that aren’t really there.

But for the real deal, if there has been an impact on your thermostat’s battery, no wonder it is not going to work.

A simple displacement in your thermostat’s battery slot, for instance, might make your device display the error message constantly or don’t power at all.

Besides the batteries, you would also need to check for any interrupted or under pressure cables that might be delivering bad power flow.

Take a good look around and try to understand if there was any physical or water impact near or within the battery compartment. Take a look at the previous (old) batteries to find something out of the ordinary or abnormal.

Once ready with the obvious preparation, let’s continue with some effective ways to get rid of the annoying “Batt Lo” massage.

How To Fix Honeywell Thermostat Low Battery With New Batteries?

As we’ve mentioned earlier, sometimes even with the new batteries the Honeywell thermostat could still be displaying that the batteries are low.

Considering all possibilities we’ve created a list of solutions designed to tackle the known causes.

We recommend applying the solutions in order for you to develop an idea of where the issue could be coming from.

Note: Honeywell thermostat uses AAA batteries so make sure you’ve got this right!

Solution #1 Power Cycle

The power cycle is a method that replaces the entire power flow with a fresh stream.

In most cases, the power cycle could be helpful in solving power-related issues, which is exactly what we’re dealing with here.

To perform a power cycle, follow the steps below:

  1. Plug your Honeywell thermostat out of the power supply.
  2. Take the batteries out of the device.
  3. Put the devices aside and wait for at least 10 minutes.
  4. Insert the batteries back into their compartments.
  5. Plug the device in a (standalone) wall outlet. Avoid using power dividers.

Once done, check if your thermostat still shows a low battery error and if it is, confidently proceed with our next solution.

Solution #2 Reposition Batteries

It might seem weird but this method has proven to work with many users struggling to get rid of the “Batt Lo” message.

You’re going to need a fresh pair of batteries and if they are already in the thermostat take them out and get the old batteries as well.

If you’ve destroyed the previous pair, you might need to purchase more as you will need two pairs of AAA batteries.

Once you’ve got two pairs of batteries, follow the steps precisely:

  1. Insert batteries pair #1 in the thermostat.
  2. Wait for 5 – 10 seconds.
  3. Reverse the battery’s polarities.
  4. Wait another 5 – 10 seconds.
  5. Take the batteries out and put the new, pair #2 in a normal position.

This shall recalibrate the devil and the low battery message should no longer appear.

If the issue is still there, we highly recommend performing this solution again as you might have missed something essential.

Solution #3 Turn The Control OFF

If your Honeywell thermostat says low battery with new batteries even after performing the previous solution we’ve got a proven technique just for you.

Turning the control feature off might be the key to remove the “Batt lo” message.

At least it appears to be a solution for some people and this is why we’ve decided to include it.

Here is a step-by-step guide of what you need to do:

  1. Uncover the programmable thermostat.
  2. Learn how to navigate.
  3. Go to the so labeled Cooling/Heating and turn it OFF.
  4. Take the batteries out of the compartment.
  5. Disconnect the red wire on the back.
  6. Wait for at least 1 hour (important)
  7. Reconnect the wire.
  8. Insert NEW batteries, not the old ones.
  9. Test if the error would be still there.

A good recommendation here is to try with 1.5 volts AA batteries. Some people state that even if they are hard to find (most batteries give only 1.2 volts each), this would be the solution to your problem.

Solution #4 Factory Reset

If nothing had worked we’re left with the possibility of a software failure.

In that regard, you’ll learn how to perform a factory reset, which will permanently erase all settings and personal configurations for your Honeywell thermostat. In other words, it will be brand new.

Follow the steps below to revert your Honeywell thermostat to factory settings:

  1. Press the Weather button and hold for about 10 seconds.
  2. Once the Menu appears, choose Factory Reset.
  3. Press OK and confirm by choosing YES.

To ensure that you won’t interrupt the reset, we recommend waiting for at least 3 minutes once you hit the confirmation YES.

Once reset, you might have to configure some settings from scratch but if the error is now gone, it’s all worth it.

While it seems like an issue with the batteries, the whole inconvenience could be based on a simple software or power glitch. Now when you know how to perform a restart plus the troubleshooting sequences, the error stands no chance unless it is related to a faulty hardware component.
