If SimpliSafe says entry sensor open, but in reality, it’s closed, this short guide will help you!
False readings can sometimes be an object of improper settings of your SimpliSafe system, issues with the keypad, or sensor battery failure.
This guide will help you understand what can lead to inaccurate sensor status and provide working solutions to try at home immediately.
If SimpliSafe is misreading the sensor status, open and close all entry points, check the app’s firmware version, and power cycle the base station. If the issue persists, check for magnetic sensor interference.
Let’s learn more!
Why Does SimpliSafe Entry Sensor Says Open?
SimpliSafe keeps saying that one of your entry sensors is open while they are securely closed because of false application readings.
The issue can be caused by:
Let’s review the possible solutions for the false SimpliSafe sensor readings!
SimpliSafe Says Entry Sensor Open – Proven Solutions
Tip: Take out the defective sensor’s batteries in and out multiple times before starting!
1. Open and Close All Entry Points
A quick and effective resolution to the false detection of your SimpliSafe extra sensors is to open and close all the entry points that have a sensor.
This will cause your security system to repeatedly detect all sensors and correct issues with the displayed status.
Here’s how to open and close an entry point while the system is armed:
- Open the SimpliSafe app on your mobile smartphone.
- Press on the “Arm” tile to activate all of your sensors.
- Next, open all doors and windows that have a sensor.
- Within the SimpliSafe app, select the “Disarm” feature.
- Wait for 30 seconds and close all your entry sensors.
- Press “Arm” within the SimpliSafe app again to reset.
Once the system is armed again after re-opening all entry points, check if the individual status of each sensor is appropriately displayed.
You may have to close the SimpliSafe app and remove it from your device’s temporal memory to refresh the sensors’ status instantly.
Alert: Verify that your mobile is securely connected to the internet!
2. Clear the Sensor’s Status On the Keypad
The alert stating that one of your entry sensors stood open upon arming your system could be produced by a keypad status discrepancy.
If you’re arming your system through the SimpliSafe app, you will receive an alert, but your keypad’s configuration says the sensor is open.
Here’s how to clear the sensor’s status from the SimpliSafe keypad:
- Press the “Home” button on the SimpliSafe keypad.
- Enter the master code to access the system options.
- Next, navigate to the “Test” mode tab from the menu.
- Activate the testing feature and wait for 15 seconds.
- Then, deactivate the testing regime to reset the status.
Activating the “Test” mode of your SimpliSafe system allows for determining if all extra sensors are correctly connected to the base station.
Some extra sensors, such as your motion sensors, have an in-built Action button that will produce sound when pressed during a test regime mode.
Note: The base station will produce the sensor’s testing tone!
3. Power Reset the SimpliSafe Base Station
If your sensor’s condition is still not appropriately recognized by the SimpliSafe app, you should perform a hard reset on the base station.
The SimpliSafe station uses cellular radio waves to communicate with each extra sensor and allow you to control them.
Warning: All extra sensors will lose reception while the base station is unplugged!
Here’s how to perform a power reset on the SimpliSafe base station:
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the base station.
- Turn the unit upside down and locate the battery section.
- Next, open the compartment and remove the battery unit.
- Wait for 60 seconds and reinstall the base station’s battery.
- Finally, plug the base station’s power cable on both ends.
The power adapter keeps the SimpliSafe base station’s backup battery charged consistently, so your system can continue working in case of a power outage.
Thus, not taking the base station’s battery out will prevent the unit from discharging and power cycling properly, which is ineffective.
Alert: Verify that the base station’s backup battery is appropriately inserted in the compartment!
4. Remove & Re-Add the Sensor
If only one of your sensor’s status is not detected correctly by the SimpliSafe app, you should remove and re-add the sensor’s profile from the app.
The procedure is simple, but when your SimpliSafe sensor is not added to the application, it will not function properly or remain armed.
Here’s how to remove and re-add the entry sensor on Android and iOS:
- Open the SimpliSafe app and navigate to “My System.”
- Press on “Device Settings” and locate the entry sensor.
- Press on the sensor and then press on “Remove Device.”
- Go to “Device Settings” again and choose “Add Device.”
- Select the type of extra sensor you wish to add to the app.
- Follow the instructions to create the entry sensor’s profile.
Note: All settings and configurations of the entry sensor will be erased after erasing the profile!
5. Check for Magnetic Interference
Metal contact is one of the reasons why the SimpliSafe status doesn’t match the entry sensor.
To address potential interference between the plates of the entry sensor, you must ensure that neither of the tiles is actively making contact with the metal doorframe material.
If one of the plates is actively touching metal on the doorframe, use a screwdriver to remove both units and install them on a different spot.
Ensure the sensor’s plates’ new position does not contact material other than wood, brick, or plastic.
Alert: Magnetic interference can also occur with the cellular signal sent by the base station!
SimpliSafe Says Entry Sensor Closed But It’s Actually Open?
If, instead of announcing that one of your sensors is open, the SimpliSafe app says they are all closed and secure, there could be an issue with the SimpliSafe app.
The physical condition of the sensor reflects the digital status displayed within the SimpliSafe application at all times.
Here are some reliable solutions to resolve reading issues of the SimpliSafe system:
Clear the SimpliSafe App’s Cache
The SimpliSafe application might have developed an issue due to not clearing the cache for a continuous amount of time.
The longer you’ve utilized the application without erasing the system cache, the heavier the impact this would have on the performance.
- To clear SimpliSafe’s cache on Android, go to “Settings” → “Storage” → “Applications” → “SimpliSafe” → “Clear Data/Clear Cache.”
- To offload SimpliSafe on iOS, go to “Settings” → “SimpliSafe” → “Offload App” and wait for 25–30 seconds while the app is offloaded.
Note: You cannot launch the SimpliSafe app while offloaded on iOS.
Update the SimpliSafe App’s Version
The SimpliSafe app could also develop a fault for not updating the platform’s firmware version for a significant amount of time.
SimpliSafe periodically releases a newer firmware of the application that you must manually (or automatically) apply through the App Store or Google Play.
Open the App Store or the Google Play Store on the mobile, and go to “Manage Installed Applications” to “Update” SimpliSafe.
Note: Verify that your mobile’s connection is stable to start and complete the updating!
Reinstall the SimpliSafe Application
If the SimpliSafe app still does not display the entry sensor status properly, you should remove and reinstall the app on your mobile.
A potential software file corruption can lead to a permanent decrease and degradation of the app’s functionality and all sensors.
How to Reinstall the SimpliSafe App On Android?
- Open the “Settings” app on your Android mobile device.
- Go to “Storage” → “Apps” and find the SimpliSafe app.
- Next, highlight the application and press on “Uninstall.”
- Launch the Google Play Store on your Android device.
- Download the SimpliSafe app and sign in to your profile.
How to Reinstall the SimpliSafe App On iOS?
- Hold the SimpliSafe app on the iOS’s homepage.
- Once the menu occurs, press “Remove this App.”
- Open the App Store application on your mobile.
- Locate the SimpliSafe app using the search field.
- Download and install the SimpliSafe application.
Note: If your SimpliSafe app still shows an incorrect sensor state, perhaps your device is faulty, so contact SimpliSafe Customer Service.
Quick Recap
If SimpliSafe says entry sensor is open, first open and close all sensors, check for interference with metallic surfaces, and update the app’s version.
Also, reinstall your SimpliSafe app and factory reset the base station.
