Why Is There No Power to SimpliSafe Doorbell?
There could be multiple causes for the sudden power outage of your SimpliSafe standard or Pro version, including a supply issue at the mains or a wire malfunction.
To understand why the doorbell is persistently losing power, we must review all possible causes first.
So here is a complete list containing everything you need to know:
Are you Receiving a Low-Voltage Alert?
In cases when the SimpliSafe standard or Pro doorbell receives insufficient power or doesn’t receive power at all, you might get an alert notification from the SimpliSafe mobile app.
The doorbell’s power wiring keeps the internal battery charged, but the power might be insufficient.
Note: Low voltage alerts are meant to warn the user of the battery failure and motivate the homeowner to take prevention measures.
SimpliSafe Doorbell No Power – Quick & Easy Solutions
It’s easy to solve the electrical issues with the doorbell as long as you follow the steps in order!
1. Soft Reset the SimpliSafe Doorbell
SimpliSafe has designed two emergency buttons with the doorbell’s mechanism in case of wiring or battery failure.
The buttons can be found on both the standard and Pro versions of the SimpliSafe doorbell, have the same function, and are identical in size positioning on the back.
Here’s how to access SimpliSafe’s back panel:
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to undo the doorbell’s screws.
- Next, carefully pull the front panel towards you to unmount it.
- Locate the action buttons on the back panel of the doorbell.
Which Button “Kills” the SimpliSafe Doorbell?
Once you’ve accessed the back panel of the SimpliSafe doorbell, you should see two individual buttons, different in size.
The small button is the “Reboot” button, while the more prominent button is the “Reset” button.
Hold the smaller button for up to 10 seconds to power off the doorbell.
If you accidentally press the reset button, the settings of the SimpliSafe doorbell will be reset to default, and you will lose all device configurations.
Tip: We recommend postponing the factory reset for now, at least until you attempt all the quicker solutions first.
2. Reset the Circuit Breaker’s Power
Although SimpliSafe doorbells have an internal battery, the main power supply is through the A/C hard wiring led from the mounting bracket.
The doorbell cannot function without proper hard-wiring with the breaker, so the next step is to reset the switch supplying the power.
- The doorbell wires should have an individual circuit breaker switch!
Here’s how to reset the SimpliSafe doorbell through the power switch:
- Access the circuit breaker compartment in your home or garage.
- Next, open the panel and locate the “Doorbell” switch on the wall.
- Push the switch downwards to deactivate the doorbell’s A/C supply.
- Wait for 60 seconds while the power is deactivated at the breaker.
- Push the switch towards the “On” position to restore the A/C supply.
Reminder: Don’t forget to suspend the doorbell’s power while working on the unit!
3. Inspect SimpliSafe’s Hard-Wiring
There’s a high chance that the doorbell’s “C” and “GRND” wires have not been wired correctly with the terminals, and therefore the unit is losing power.
The next step is to access the doorbell power installation on your wall and re-knot the copper conductors with SimpliSafe’s terminals.
Here’s how to correct the installation of the SimpliSafe doorbell’s power setup:
- Uninstall the two screws on the frontal plate of your doorbell.
- Next, deactivate the circuit breaker’s power for the doorbell.
- Remove the plate and start removing the mounting bracket.
- Pull out the bracket and undo the wires from the A/C terminals.
- Once loose, also remove the wires from the electrical poles.
- Clean the battery terminals out of debris or dust accumulation.
- Re-knot the wires onto the terminals and push them back in.
The red “C” wire and the white “GRND” wire deliver the power supply to the doorbell.
If either of those wires is defective and can no longer transmit electricity effectively, the internal battery of the SimpliSafe doorbell will start failing.
Alert: If either of the wires must be replaced, contact a SimpliSafe technician!
4. Uninstall the Doorbell’s Battery
Another excellent solution whenever the SimpliSafe doorbell has no power is to reinsert the rechargeable battery unit, found within the faceplate.
However, full disassembly of the doorbell is required to access the internal compartment and the battery socket of SimpliSafe, so take this method with caution.
Here’s how to uninstall the battery of the SimpliSafe doorbell in easy steps:
- Remove the faceplate of the SimpliSafe camera from the unit.
- Use an appropriate screwdriver to loosen the mounting screws.
- Push the battery compartment plate underneath the buttons.
- Gently take out the internal battery of the SimpliSafe doorbell.
- You should wait 30–40 seconds while the battery is removed.
- Rebuild the doorbell and install it back to the mounting plate.
SimpliSafe doorbell batteries are typically small and could have a lifespan of up to 2 years if the A/C wiring is consistent and reliable.
The more your doorbell battery has to work independently, the more likely it will stop working early, prompting you to install a new rechargeable battery unit.
Pro Tip: If you cannot access the battery, use a pin or a paperclip to eject it.
5. Inspect the Base Station’s Chime
The reason for the malfunction could be with the base station if the unit is not producing a chime whenever the doorbell is pressed.
This may deceive you into thinking that the doorbell does not have a power supply while the base station chime tone is lowered, muted, or fully deactivated.
Here’s how to inspect the SimpliSafe base station’s chime tone:
- Open the SimpliSafe mobile app on the mobile.
- Tap “My System” from the bottom of the settings.
- Select “Base Station Settings” from the section.
- Next, choose the “Entry Sensor Chime” feature.
- Pull the slider towards the “+” icon to increase it.
- Remember to press “Save” to increase the volume.
When you’re ready to increase the volume, test whether your SimpliSafe doorbell is working, and if yes, power reaches the device.
However, if you don’t hear the chime, perhaps your doorbell is genuinely powered off, so would need additional troubleshooting.
Note: The louder your doorbell chimes, the faster the speakers wear out.
6. Restore SimpliSafe to Factory Defaults
If you keep experiencing power issues with the SimpliSafe doorbell, restoring the unit to factory defaults is strongly recommended.
All you need to do is access the action buttons on the back panel of the unit and press the more prominent factory reset button instead of the small button.
Here’s how to restore the SimpliSafe doorbell to factory defaults in easy steps:
- Undo the screws holding the doorbell’s faceplate intact.
- Remove the SimpliSafe plate and expose the buttons.
- Hold the factory reset button to initiate the procedure.
- Once the SimpliSafe doorbell blinks, wait for 10 seconds.
- Reinstall the doorbell’s faceplate onto the mounting plate.
The factory reset will cause the doorbell to lose connection with the base station, losing all customized and priority settings.
You must re-add the doorbell within the SimpliSafe app and re-establish the connection with the base station to configure settings.
Note: Do not press any buttons on the SimpliSafe doorbell after the factory reset has started to prevent interrupting the reset procedure.
Quick Recap:
If the SimpliSafe doorbell has no power, reset the doorbell’s power at the circuit breaker, reinsert the internal battery, and inspect the wiring.
You may also need to perform a factory reset on the SimpliSafe doorbell.
