Nest not cooling to set temperature and you’re looking for a quick workaround?

Moreover, we will unveil how Nest works and how to establish the cooling feature correctly using the built-in configuration system of the device.
Sometimes Nest might not be cooling to the set temperature because of inappropriately established cables. This issue could also appear if the system doesn’t contain enough power to keep the cooler going and you will need to power cycle your device to fix that.
Before getting the hang of the troubleshooting process, we figured it would be easier for you if you first learn what might be causing the issue.
Here is why the nest thermostat might not be reaching the temperature it has been set to:
👉 Compatibility – There is a chance that the system you are trying to install Nest to is incompatible.
👉 No maintenance – Sometimes all it takes for the device to start working again is a restart.
👉C-Wire System – If there is a present C-Wire connection, it might be causing issues with your Nest-appointed cooling configuration.
👉 Faulty Wires – If the installation of your wires isn’t established correctly, there is a high possibility that the cooling feature might not be working correctly.
👉 Y1 Terminal Issue – If your A/C’s wiring isn’t connected to the Y1 terminal, there is a high possibility that the device won’t reach the established setting for cooling.
Sometimes there might be a hardware malfunction that requires full disassembling of the device in order to fix it, but we shall exclude this possibility for now and start addressing each cause individually.
Before initiating the troubleshooting process of your Nest cooling device, our first suggestion is to perform a firm restart.
This way, you will determine whether this issue is based on a simple one-time malfunction or not. Once ready start applying the methods below one after another for best results:
The most common answer to how to set the minimum temperature on Nest and other cooling issues is to check Nest’s connection to the Y1 terminal.
Your only obligation here is to ensure that all of the wirings are paired correctly with your configuration’s corresponding component.
If possible, you may remove the cable connected to the Y1 and ensure that there is an inch and a half of exposed wire connected to the Nest base.
Some of the cable connections for different Nest operations might be interfering with each other and cause cooling issues.
Important: Remember to always disable the power of your Nest device before interacting with any of the electrical components we have previously discussed.
Many users mention that after disconnecting their C-wire connection, all options were available for Nest and the maximum cool temperatures were immediately reached.
To perform this method, you have to disable the power of Nest once again to avoid possible injury.
However, what you should do here is open the wiring compartment or check underneath the device to locate the connection ports.
From there, you should be seeing a few cables already connected to your Nest: Y1-Cool, which we’ve established in the previous method, W1 – Heat, C-common, and RH-Power.
To make this easier for you, we will display the process into a few simple steps:
- First, turn off the power of your Nest for safety reasons.
- Locate all cable connections somewhere throughout your Nest.
- Locate the C (common) wire and disconnect it.
- Turn on the power of your nest and you’re ready to go!
Note: On most thermostats the C-Wire enables a continuous flow of 24VAC power reaching all points of the device.
It’s a green wire running all the way from your thermostat to locate it more easily.
If the software of your Nest is outdated, there is a high chance of having issues with the functionalities.
In case your network connection occasionally drops your Nest might have missed an important update.
Open the Nest mobile application and head to the Update tab. Scan for any updates and if there are any available, don’t hesitate to download and install them right away.
Regardless of the restart and factory reset, there is another effective way to entirely reset your Nest and hopefully refresh its options.
For this step, you will have to grab your phone and enter the installed Nest app.
Once within the application, follow the below steps to perform a factory reset:
- Enter the Nest app on your smartphone.
- Select which Nest thermostat device you would like to disconnect.
- Enter the options of the Nest device.
- Scroll all the way down and click on the remove button.
- You will be required to confirm your choice.
Easy as that, your Nest is now disconnected and hopefully offline.
To pair it up again, you must go and click the hardware button on the device to turn it on and connect it back to the Nest network using your smartphone app.
Notice: After a factory reset, all saved configurations will be erased. Make sure to take notes of your current settings by going into Settings > Equipment.
From there you will be able to record all system wires, safety temperature, and heating adjustments so you can restore them easily after the reset.
If you didn’t know Nest provides you with the capability of adjusting a schedule for your temperature control.
In case you’ve misconfigured this feature, your nest might be following a specific schedule and not cooling when you’re expecting it to.
Simply open your mobile application and make sure that Eco Temperatures (automatically enabled to preserve power) are disabled.
Also, ensure that Auto-Schedule is disabled to avoid the possibility of wrong timing.
Smart products are nothing if the wiring isn’t installed correctly.
This is why the next thing we are going to review is the cable configuration of your Nest and determine whether there are any hardware issues or not.
We’ve provided you with a few simple steps to make this process easier for you.
- Switch off the power of your Nest to avoid possible injury.
- Take off the display of your Nest.
- Take a look at all of the cable connections and see if there are disconnected wirings.
Sometimes the cables inside your Nest might need straightening or light support to start functioning again.
If even after this your Nest still won’t increase its cooling levels, you might have to consider passing this task to an experienced Nest technician.
If after all of this your Nest still doesn’t increase its cool levels all the way to the maximum, there might be a more complex issue than you think.
For instance, if there is a hardware failure of the device and it cannot transmit correct information to your A/C, you won’t get your weekly heating schedule fulfilled.
In that regard, the very last option you’ve got would be to reach out to Nest customer services for additional assistance. If however, they are not able to help you might have to pay for a repair.
