  4. Press Menu to store the setting

To exit the menu mode, press any other key.

Solution #4: Adjust Squelch Tones

When no signals are detected, Squelch will silence the speaker. When the squelch is properly adjusted, you will only hear noise when you are really receiving a signal.

The stronger the signals, the greater the squelch level that must be set.

Depending on the intensity of RF noise in the surrounding area, a different squelch level may be required.

  2. Tweak the Tuning control to correct the level
  3. Press any key other than Power to store the new setting and exit the squelch adjustment.
Tip: Select the level that best eliminates background noises when no signal is available.

Solution #5: Turn Off The PL Decode

The Kenwood TM-281A is equipped with a Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System (CTCSS) or Digital Code Squelch (DCS).

Such a feature is known to some users as Private Line (PL) Decode. Sometimes, having the feature on will block your transmissions. 

It is off if you never configured any of those functions on your Kenwood TM-281A.

Thus, it is not the thing causing you transmission troubles.
