How to connect MyQ To HomeKit? MyQ is very helpful if you have a car and like smart devices.
Connecting your device to Homekit is the natural next step. But how do you do it?
Connecting a MyQ device to Homekit is easy because both environments are natively compatible, meaning you can connect via the apps or scan the code on your device. Further, you can integrate both systems with IFTTT or SmartThings to make your house even more comfortable.
If you are unsure how any of those methods work, you have nothing to worry about. The guide below will guide you through the whole process.
We will help you get the most out of your smart devices.
In an instant, your house will turn into a futuristic place where all smart devices work to make your life easier so you can focus on your happiness.
How To Connect MyQ To Homekit?
MyQ is great for allowing you to control your garage door and also other perks. But you can go even beyond with HomeKit integration.
If you are looking for a way of adding MyQ to Homekit, you might be confused about what software and hardware you need.
Depending on who you ask, the answer will differ.
How to connect MyQ to Apple Homekit? Usually, the most popular way of connecting MyQ to Homekit, and even the one recommended by the brand, is using a smart hub powered by Homebridge.
It could be the myQ model or another one.
Right now, we have the myQ Chamberlain smart hub in mind, which works as a connection between the myQ app and Homekit.
There is also the myQ Smart Home Garage Hub.
First, the device you will connect must be up to date. That means its dedicated app (if necessary for the connection) must be using the latest version.
Also, the device must be running the latest firmware. Otherwise, it might fail to connect with HomeKit properly, or it can connect but fail to perform certain functions.
Secondly, the device must be in the same network as your Apple devices. For example, suppose you are using carrier data on your iPhone.
In that case, you should switch to your home’s Wi-Fi and connect the non-Apple device to the same network.
That means you must connect your iPhone to the 2.4GHz network generated by your router.
Although the new models can enjoy a 5GHz connection, that is not true for other smart devices such as smart hubs.
Method #1: Connect Your myQ To The Home App
Adding myQ to Homekit is easy. The myQ Smart Garage Hub is available directly through the brand’s site or at retailers.
It connects to your existing garage door opener and allows you to control it using the myQ app.
If this is the device you’ve got when you decide to use myQ, you have probably already set it up with the myQ app.
However, you can set it up with the Apple Home app too:
- Open the Home app
- Choose “Add Accessory”
- Scan the HomeKit code on the back of the hub
- Name the accessory or garage door
From now on, you should see the status of your garage door in the Home app, and you can control it with Siri voice commands.
Note: myQ has more than one device to control your garage door and communicate with your car.
Whatever device you use, you can apply the method above to connect to HomeKit!
Method #2: Connect The MyQ App To HomeKit
Suppose you have multiple myQ devices in your house. In that case, it is quicker to use an app to add myQ to Homekit.
The process is very easy too. Here is what you must do:
- Open the MyQ app
- Click on Menu
- Go to Settings
- Now click on Integrations
- Choose Apple HomeKit
- Confirm on Enable HomeKit
- There will be a few prompts, and then done
There is no huge difference between connecting through the Home app or the myQ app.
It is really only a matter of convenience and which app you prefer.
However, once you connect the device to HomeKit, you can start managing all your smart devices from a single app.
Method #3: IFTTT (If This Then That) Integration
Among the many applications and gadgets that may be linked with IFTTT are myQ and HomeKit.
You can also set up “recipes” to have one app do something when an event happens, like open the garage door when you get home.
Using IFTTT is a bit more complicated than the first two methods we’ve shown. However, it is fun and allows you to explore more possibilities.
First of all, let’s set up the different environments together:
- Go to the IFTTT website OR open the IFTTT app
- Log in
- Find the MyQ and HomeKit services
- Connect them to your IFTTT account (that will require your credentials from those services)
How To Set An Applet
IFTTT works by offering you the possibility of creating applets (which are the automation recipes we’ve mentioned).
These applets work by recognizing triggers and performing actions in response.
- Click on the “New Applet” button
- Click on the “+” button to add a trigger
- Select MyQ as the trigger service
- Choose the action that will be the trigger
- Click on the “+” button to add an action
- Select HomeKit as the action service
- Choose the action that should happen
There is no limit to what triggers and actions you can match. If you live in a fully automated house with plenty of smart devices, you can add all of them and make your house comfortable.
Tip: You can use IFTTT together with other simpler methods. While simpler methods allow you to control what you need directly, IFTTT stays in the background and controls pre-defined interactions.
Method #4: SmartThings Integration
SmartThings is a smart home platform that allows you to connect different devices and apps, including myQ and HomeKit.
For example, you can use the SmartThings app to control your garage door opener and create automation.
It works similarly to IFTTT since it allows you to create automation.
Here is how to set everything up:
- Open the SmartThings app
- Go to “Automations”
- Tap on the “+” button
- Choose “SmartApps”
- Tap “MyQ” SmartApp.
- Connect your MyQ account to SmartThings.
How To Create Automations
Once MyQ is allowed on SmartThings, you can create personalized automation.
Similar to IFTTT, the automations work with triggers and actions.
- Go to “Automations” tab
- Click the “+” button
- Select MyQ as the trigger
- Choose an event to act as a trigger
- Select HomeKit as the action
- Choose the specific HomeKit device or scene that will perform the action
- Choose the specific action
Note: IFTTT and SmartThings are very similar. You must choose one of them according to the compatibility between those apps and other devices you have at home, such as smart locks, thermostats, etc.
What We Learned
How to connect MyQ to HomeKit? It is, in fact, very simple to connect myQ devices to HomeKit because the integration is native.
That means you don’t need to spend time reading manuals and writing code just to make something so simple.
Moreover, you can go beyond just integrating them. For example, you can also create automations to open the garage door whenever you get home.
