Kasa owners who also have Apple devices are wondering: how to connect Kasa to Homekit?
The answer is that doing so is very simple! That was very difficult a few years ago, but Kasa has recently become an official part of Homekit-supported brands.
Connecting Kasa to Homekit requires a network that supports all your devices. Moreover, you must ensure every device is up to date. Then, you can make the connection via the Kasa app or the Apple Home app, and use Homebridge non-compatible devices.
Although it seems very simple for many people, we understand that other people are not knowledgeable about tech. With that in mind, the guide below goes over every little detail.
After reading everything, you will have all the necessary information to conveniently set up your smart devices!
How To Connect Kasa To Homekit?
How to connect Kasa to Apple Homekit? Fortunately, Kasa has recently been integrated as an official compatible brand for the Homekit environment.
That means adding Kasa to Homekit has become much more manageable.
Without the official integration, users had to resort to Homebridge or Scrypted (for cameras only).
However, there is no need to buy a third-party smart hub or use your computer as a dedicated server.
If you are a Kasa owner, you can integrate with Homekit to access these benefits:
✅ Voice Control
You may control the lights in your home without opening the Kasa Smart or Home app.
✅ Integration With Other Devices
Multiple device automation and scenarios may be set up.
✅ Remote Access
When you’re not at home, you can still manage your Kasa gadget with the help of the Home app or the Kasa Smart app.
✅ Better Security
With end-to-end encryption, HomeKit-enabled gadgets keep your data safe and let you choose who can access your devices.
You can follow the steps below without trouble. If anything does not work, you can go back a few steps and ensure you proceed correctly!
As with any Homekit-enabled brand, Kasa allows you to connect via its proprietary app or Apple Home.
With that in mind, we will guide you through both methods. But there are a few preparation steps you must follow for either.
Preparation Steps
Every time you are about to connect one device to another, you must ensure a few things:
- They are on the same network
- All devices are up to date
Being in the same network is essential and might be overlooked if your router generates two connections: one for the 2.4GHz frequency and another for 5GHz.
Kasa devices can only connect to the 2.4GHz network, so you must also connect your iPhone to that network.
Devices being up to date is also crucial. When they are not, a few glitches might prevent the correct connection.
Or, even when the link is successful, you will later find some functions not working or working incorrectly.
How To Update Your Devices
Here is how you can ensure your iPhone is up to date:
- Navigate to Settings
- Click on General
- Tap on Software Update
- If available, install the new update
And here is how to update the firmware on a Kasa device:
- Open the Kasa app
- Go to “Me”
- Click on Firmware Update
- If any firmware update is available, click on it to install
The “Firmware Update” section on the Kasa app shows firmware updates available for all your connected devices.
That way, you can quickly check if multiple devices need new firmware.
Method #1: Connect Through The Kasa App
Since TP-Link Kasa now supports HomeKit, the app has also been updated to connect easily to HomeKit.
To be honest, there is no significant difference in the result.
Once you allow HomeKit to access your devices, you will receive notifications about them and be able to control them with Siri.
However, suppose you prefer to manage a few settings of the devices on the Kasa app (after all, it is designed to control those devices).
In that case, you can also manage their connection to HomeKit on that app.
Here is how:
- Open the Kasa Smart app
- Tap the menu button
- Select “HomeKit”
- Tap “Add HomeKit Device”
- Select the Kasa device you want to connect
- Name the device
- Add it to a room
You can check if the procedure has worked. You can try to trigger anything that would generate a notification or simply attempt to control it via Siri.
If anything has gone wrong, disconnect and try again.
Don’t Delete Your Kasa App
Even though you have just connected your Kasa devices to HomeKit, we recommend you keep your access to the Kasa app.
The Kasa Smart app provides access to the device’s capabilities and settings, including scheduling, timers, and scene creation.
The Kasa Smart app also lets you manage many Kasa gadgets simultaneously and organize them by area.
It is also unclear whether all Kasa products are already integrated into HomeKit.
Thus, you can manage HomeKit-compatible and non-HomeKit-compatible Kasa products using the Kasa Smart app, but only HomeKit-compatible products with the Apple Home app.
Method #2: Connect Using The Home App
If you want to get rid of the Kasa app for your device management, you probably want to start by connecting via the Home App.
Here are the steps for doing so:
- Open the Apple Home app
- Tap the “+” button
- Tap “Add Accessory”
- Scan the HomeKit code on the Kasa device/manually enter the code.
- Follow the prompts
Remember That the Home App Is Limited
When you manage your Kasa device through the Apple Home app, you’ll be presented with a less robust UI and fewer customization options.
The device may be operated using the Home app or Siri. Still, only a subset of the capabilities offered by the Kasa Smart app will be accessible.
Method #3: Use Homebridge For Older Devices
The official integration of Kasa and HomeKit is recent. Also, TP-Link (a Kasa manufacturer) does not present a comprehensive list of all HomeKit-ready devices.
That leaves the door open for doubts regarding the complete compatibility of the product range.
The most famous software to make the integration between HomeKit and other brands possible is Homebridge.
It can be installed in your MacBook and use a bit of the laptop’s processing power to create a server that translates the frequency of your Kasa devices to HomeKit.
If you are facing a situation where one of your Kasa devices can’t connect to HomeKit, do the following:
- Open the terminal on your MacBook
- Type the command “npm install -g homebridge” to install Homebridge
- Type “npm install -g homebridge-kasa” to install the Kasa plugin
- Run the command “nano ~/.homebridge/config.json” to create a new configuration file for Homebridge
- Add your Kasa IP address, username, and password to that file. It looks like this:
"accessories": [ { "accessory": "Kasa", "name": "generic device", "ip": "XXX.XXX.X.XXX", "username": "myusername", "password": "mypassword" } ]
Next, you must type “homebridge” on the terminal to get the software running.
Now on to the HomeKit:
- Tap the “+” button
- Select Homebridge
- Your Kasa devices should show up
Note: Instead of using Homebridge on your MacBook, you can buy HOOBS, which is a dedicated Homebridge smart hub.
It works exactly like installing Homebridge on your computer, but without having to keep your PC online all the time.
The only con is that it is very expensive.
