When your Govee lights not connecting to WiFi then there is a problem either with your network, mobile device, or the LED lights.
Besides your network and mobile device, the connectivity between your Govee LEDs and the network router is possible via the mobile Govee Home application.
That adds one more suspect to the equation and in this post, we’re about to address each possibility.
Your Govee lights won’t connect to the WiFi when the network is down or the broadband uses 5Ghz frequency. The Govee Home application is also a source of connection issues so a clean installation is always a good way to approach the issue.
Why Are Govee LED Lights Not Connecting To WiFi?
Since there are quite a few usual suspects for connection issues with Govee LED lights, here is a list with a brief description of each possibility:
1. Incorrect WiFi Frequency
Govee lights only support 2.4GHz WiFi bands and you won’t be able to connect to 5GHz WiFi.
2. Wrong WiFi Password
You may be inserting an incorrect WiFi password and that’s why your LED lights are not getting connected.
3. Problem with the Govee Home App
There could be an issue with the home application that connects the LED lights to the WiFi.
4. LED Lights are too Far Away
Positioning your Govee LED lights too far away from the network device will result in a failed connection attempt.
5. Internet Problems
Your network may be experiencing downtime and that’s why you cannot get the LED lights connected.
How To Fix When Govee Not Connecting To WiFi?
The solution includes targeting everything from the Govee Home application all the way to your network router.
We’ve prepared a solutions list for you to follow and not only solve the connection problem but also identify where it was coming from.
Solution #1 Connect Lights To A 2.4GHz WiFi
As we’ve mentioned earlier Govee lights are only compatible with 2.4GHz WiFi networks.
If you were attempting to connect your Govee LED lights to a 5GHz WiFi by now, the connection will keep failing since the lights aren’t compatible.
You must get your Gove lights connected to a 2.4GHz WiFi and here’s how:
- Go to the Govee home app.
- Tap on the “Devices” tab.
- Select your Govee lights from the list of devices.
- Go to settings.
- Locate the WiFi field.
- Tap the field and search for your 2.4GHz WiFi.
- Enter the password.
- Connect and test.
How To Create A 2.4GHz WiFi Network?
If you don’t have 2.4GHz WiFi on your network, that’s okay. You can follow these instructions to create a 2.4GHz WiFi easily:
- Open the CMD on your computer or laptop.
- Type “ipconfig”.
- Copy the default gateway of your network by scrolling down a little.
- Open your browser and paste it into the search field.
- Login to your router using “admin” and “admin” as credentials.
- Once in, go to the Network tab.
- Select “Create network” and complete the on-screen instructions.
- Make sure to choose “2.4 GHz” at the band settings.
Note: Your router may restart while bringing the 2.4GHz WiFi online.
Solution #2 Verify WiFi Password
There’s a high chance that you’re writing the WiFi password incorrectly.
This is one of the major reasons that Govee users are unable to get their LED strips connected to the internet successfully.
To verify your WiFi password, you can check on the bottom panel of the router. There you can find other user credentials along with the password.
Keep in mind that if you’ve created a 2.4GHz WiFi network during the previous solution, you can customize the password while configuring the network settings of the new WiFi.
Tip: You can configure the password through the network settings you’ve logged on in solution #1.
Solution #3 Move Lights Closer To Router
One of the reasons that your Govee lights fail to connect with the WiFi, is that they are not close enough to the router.
Everybody puts the Govee lights wherever they feel comfortable the most, but sometimes this location can be too far or a bad connection spot.
In that regard, you need to locate a better spot for your Govee LED lights and position them there.
Then, you can reconnect your lights through the Govee home app and determine if they would pair with the WiFi now.
Tip: Test whether your Govee lights will connect when next to the network router.
Solution #4 Fix Internet Issues
Another reason for your Govee LED lights to keep failing to connect is internet problems.
If there’s a problem with your network or WiFi, the chances are that either your lights will connect but lose signal constantly or won’t connect at all.
Here are some easy ways you can troubleshoot your internet connection easily:
- Restart the router – Unplug > Wait > Reconnect.
- Reduce your internet usage – Reduce internet activity related to WiFi.
- Disable VPN – Any VPN software on machines connected to the WiFi.
- Seek help– To resolve network problems call your internet service supplier (ISP).
Alert: Do not proceed before you’re confident that the WiFi/internet is not the problem.
Solution #5 Reinstall The Govee Home App
If the Govee lights not connecting to WiFi after troubleshooting your network, you should reinstall the Govee home app to solve the problem.
Since the connection between the lights and the network is made possible with the Home app, reinstalling it might just solve this issue.
To reinstall the Govee home app, head to Settings > Storage > Apps > Govee Home App > Uninstall on your mobile device.
Then you can re-acquire the Govee Home app from your device’s app store or Google Play.
Alert: Reinstalling the Govee Home app will cause you to log out of your account. Make sure you remember your login credentials.
Solution #6 Reset The Govee Lights
If nothing worked so far, you should factory reset your Govee lights. This will solve any software complications that are preventing the lights from pairing with your network.
The process shouldn’t take longer than several minutes and requires physical interaction with the LED lights.
Here’s how to reset your Govee lights step-by-step:
- Locate your Govee LED light’s control box.
- Press the power button and hold it.
- While holding the power button, press the middle button 4 times.
- Unplug the light strip for 10 minutes.
- Wait the time, plug your lights and they should be reset!
