Whenever Siri not connected to internet then probably your iOS device isn’t as well.
However, there are occasions in which you might be connected successfully but Siri would still refuse to communicate with the servers.
In such cases, troubleshooting is inevitable and in this post, you’ll learn everything you need to know.
The voice assistant Siri would not be connected to the internet whenever your iOS device is not hooked up as well or there is no internet on your WiFi/cellular. Sometimes the problem could be coming from the network settings or the iOS device as a whole.
Why Does Siri Say Not Connected To Internet?
It’s important to understand that even if you’ve enabled your cellular data, your WiFi will still remain ON and connected until there is an active source.
Sometimes there could be a WiFi network, without an internet flowing within.
That happens whenever your router stops receiving packets but continues to share the WiFi that your Apple device is connected to.
With that in mind here are some cases in which Siri will tell you that it’s not connected to the internet:
- WiFi/Cellular is disabled
- No internet on your WiFi
- No mobile data on your cellular/bad reception
- Apple device network settings bug
- An issue with the Apple device microphone
- General Apple device OS issue
Note: Whenever using cellular, make sure to turn OFF your WiFi and vice versa!
What To Fix When Siri Says Not Connected To Internet?
The first thing that you should attempt is to reconnect your device to the internet and check whether this internet is actually working.
Let’s learn how in the first method:
Method #1 Connect Your Phone To The Internet
As the issue suggests, Siri says that it isn’t connected to the internet because your Apple device isn’t.
In this method, we will want you to make sure that your Apple device is secured with a WiFi network or with cellular data and has an active connection with the web.
With older Apple devices, Siri requires the internet to be used in the first place, while with newer iPhones, the internet isn’t required for basic local functions and voice commands.
- To connect your Apple device with a WiFi network, go to Settings > WiFi and select your household’s WiFi. Enter the password and tap “Connect”.
- To connect your Apple device with cellular data, go to Settings > Mobile Data and press the “Enable” button.
Note: If connecting with cellular data, make sure that your mobile plan supports 3G/4G.
Method #2 Re-Enable Siri From The Settings
It’s recommended to toggle Siri OFF and then turn back the voice assistant ON to check if that would solve the problem.
Sometimes there could be a bug that is preventing Siri from connecting with the servers, although your phone has internet.
Here’s how to re-enable Siri easily:
- On your phone, go to the Settings.
- Tap on “Siri & Search”.
- Disable “Listen for Hey Siri” and “Active Siri with side button”.
- Turn both of the features back on.
- Test Siri.
Tip: Give your iOS device a minute or two between disabling and enabling Siri.
Method #3 Reset Your Apple Device’s Network Settings
A widely suggested fix whenever Siri not connected to internet, is to reset your device’s network settings.
The network settings include cellular cache, WiFi networks, Bluetooth connections.
To reset your iOS device’s network settings, follow these instructions:
- On your Apple device, go to Settings > General.
- Locate the Reset option at the bottom of the page.
- Tap on “Reset Network Settings”.
- Confirm the process.
- Wait for your phone to reset the network settings.
Note: It could take up to a minute for the reset to conclude.
Method #4 Disable Siri Dictation
The Apple support team has said that having Siri dictation enabled may cause interference with the assistant.
Essentially, Siri dictation is a feature that is used to type sentences within apps only with voice commands. Sometimes this could cause connection problems.
To disable the Siri dictation, head to Settings > General > Restrictions and then locate where the “Siri dictation” feature is situated.
You can disable the option by tapping on the slider so it turns gray. If the slider is still colored, that means the dictation is still enabled.
Notice: If you’re actively using Siri dictation, disable it only for the time being of this guide.
Method #5 Update Your Device’s iOS
Outdated iOS is what causes problems with Siri the most and many other software functions on your Apple device.
It’s strongly recommended to have the iOS updated to the latest available version to fix any software-related issues.
Here’s how to update the iOS of your Apple device:
- Go to Settings
- Tap on the “General” tab
- Choose “Software Update”
- If nothing appears, select “Check for Updates”
- If there’s a new update, an “Update” button will appear
- Apply the update.
Tip: You can enable the “Automatic Updates” function through the very same tab, so you won’t have to manually update your device.
Method #6 Try Using Siri With A Headset
The Apple support team has suggested that whenever the iOS device microphone is not working, Siri might experience connection issues.
This might be why you’re seeing the “Siri not available you are not connected to the internet” message so let’s justify.
To identify if there’s a hardware problem with your phone’s microphone, pair headphones or AirPods to your Apple device and determine if Siri would work then.
Don’t forget that the headset must have a microphone in order to communicate with Siri.
Notice: If Siri works with the headset, the microphone of your device has most likely gone faulty and the next step is to contact Apple support.
Method #7 Reset Your Phone To Factory Defaults
If nothing worked so far, we suggest resetting your device to factory defaults in order to fix the Siri connection problem.
Keep in mind that a complete reset will erase all contents from your iOS device and will automatically turn off Siri.
In that regard, once the reset is done, you will have to re-enable Siri to find out if the problem was fixed.
Here’s how to reset your Apple device to factory defaults:
- Go to the Settings application
- Access the General tab
- Scroll all the way down to locate the “Reset” feature
- Tap on the “Reset” once and then choose “Erase everything”
- Wait for the reset to be complete
- Re-enable Siri from the “Siri & Search” tab and then test.
Tip: You can reset your device partially, from Settings > General > Reset if you don’t want to lose all of your device’s contents.
When Siri is not connected to the internet, start by testing your WiFi and cellular individually and by re-enabling the voice assistant. In case the problem persists, proceed with disabling the Siri dictation, updating your iOS and testing with a headset.
