Schlage Alarm Won’t Turn Off? – Here’s How to Fix

Why Does The Schlage Alarm Keep Beeping Nonstop?

Step #1: Reset Your Schlage Alarm

Be Mindful of Programming Codes

Discover the device’s default or factory codes before resetting a Schlage door lock.

These codes are always in the manual included with the lock set. You may also discover the codes on a sticker inside or outside the lock. 

These codes are necessary for a complete setup, and the manufacturer cannot assist you if you lose them.

Open The Device

Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws that hold the lock housing to the rear of the lock to open the lock housing.

Some models may have a decorative battery cover that must be removed before the housing can be unscrewed. 

When this is complete, if you do not already have the preset codes, check for the white sticker that contains them.

Leave the battery cover/back of the item off so you can reach the battery or the reset button and write them down.

1. Press the Schlage lock’s reset button
2. Push and hold the button until the red light stops flashing. 
3. Release the button
4. Wait until the light goes blue 
5. The lock will reset itself.

That prepares the device for resetting.

Note: If there is no reset button on your Schlage door lock, you will need to manually delete the lock codes by removing the batteries

Insert Code Again

To delete the current door lock codes:

1. Press and hold the Schlage button until the indicator light turns green
2. Disconnect the battery and reattach it within 10 seconds. 
3. Press and hold the Schlage button until a beep sounds.

Enter a factory-set code to confirm that the lock has been reset. After completing this step, the lock will undergo a setup procedure.

Allow it to do this on its own. The lock is prepared to be reset with the new codes when the process is complete.

Enter the new codes and reassemble the whole lock.

Step #2: Check the Batteries

Devices that depend on batteries to function will present issues once the batteries are low or malfunctioning.

If you use rechargeable batteries, now is the time to charge them.

On the other hand, if you have sparing batteries that you can put in place of the old ones, you should test them. 

Here is how to change the AAA batteries on your Schlage lock:

1. Remove the screws holding the cover on the inside of the door. 
2. Grab the sides of the cover and pull it off the door.
3. Find the screws that hold the battery cover to the lock mechanism. 
4. Remove the screws and pull the battery covers off the lock mechanism.
5. Take the batteries out of the lock and put in new ones. 
6. Reassemble the lock

If your lock has a 9-volt battery, do everything until step 4, and then take extra care when removing the battery. 

Take the wire cap off the top of the battery. Put a new battery on the wire cap and put the battery back into the compartment carefully.

Now that you changed the batteries, turn your lock on again and pay attention to how it behaves during the next 24 hours.

Alert: With 9-volt batteries, don't pinch the wires. 

Step #3: Change the Sensitivity of your Alarm

Depending on your house’s location or structure, your door is receiving too many disturbances. In that case, it will vibrate continuously, setting the alarm off.

If the door is close to the street, it might receive noises or tremors from cars and trucks. That is unfortunate. 

Other situations that trigger a similar response include the architecture of your house delivering too much vibration from one room to the other.

For example, does your alarm go off when you slam a door on the other floor? Or when the garage door is shut?

Check For Sensitivity Regulation

Now that you have checked and hinted that the problem is vibration, check if your Schlage alarm or lock has sensitivity regulation.

You can research this info about your alarm in its booklet. If your alarm has such an option, the booklet will also teach you how to change sensitivity.

Try each sensitivity degree and check the results.

Step #4: Check The Fit of The Door’s Lock

Sometimes the issue is not necessarily in your alarm’s sensitivity, but your lock fits against the door on the way. In a warped door, for example, there might be some gaps.

In such cases, the vibration that triggers the alarm is caused by the lock itself. A nice fix for this problem is caulking, which will seat the lock better.

Go to your local store and buy some caulk as well as the necessary equipment to put it into your door. Tell the seller what the problem is and they will know what you need.

Next:

1. Find the gaps in your door frame.
2. Apply the caulk slowly with the equipment.

Note: It is important not to apply too much caulk at first. Apply only a bit and then see if that is enough. If not, then apply a bit more.

Step #5: Weatherstripping Your Door

Let’s say you were able to set the alarm with the least sensitive parameters. Or, even worse, your alarm does not have such an option.

Whatever the case, you can end random beepings throughout the day by weatherstripping your door.

The technique of weatherstripping involves preventing water from entering via holes such as doors, windows, and trunks.

Additionally, the concept may apply to the materials used in such sealing techniques. 

Further, weatherstripping can also help reduce vibration in a door that receives too much stimulus from your house or the outdoors. 

While caulking is easy to do by yourself, we recommend you call a professional to weatherstrip your door.

Step #6: Call Schlage Support

Did nothing work? Then your last option is to call Schlage support and inform them of a defective product.

You must tell of all the methods you’ve tried and how none of them worked.

That will guarantee better troubleshooting on their side, and they will probably send you a new device.
