Why Is Insignia HDMI to VGA Adapter Not Working?
When you’re using an older monitor that only has VGA outputs, it could be really difficult to connect it with a newer brand of video card.
Most laptops and video cards nowadays only tend to have display and HDMI ports, and in fact, no VGA inputs. This is where the adapter comes in.
If you’ve installed your Insignia Adapter but it doesn’t seem to work, here’s why:
- The Cables are Connected Improperly to the Adapter
- There’s an issue with the External Power Cable of the Adapter
- Incorrect VGA Input is Being Used on your PC/Laptop
- There’s a problem with the Monitor’s Power
- One of the Cables (or the Adapter) Is Defective

How to Fix When Insignia VGA to HDMI Adapter Not Working?
We hope that you’ve been able to understand what has been going on with your Insignia adapter.
Since this is the only way you could put your monitor to use, we’ll do our best to troubleshoot the adapter and help the signal reach your monitor!

Solution #1 Verify All Port Connections
In this first solution, you’ll need to inspect all port and adapter connections, to make sure that everything is secured and tightened.
In total, there are 4 port and cable connections that should be accounted for. If either of these connections is faulty, the signal will be interrupted.
Here are all connections that you should check in your Insignia Adapter and PC setup:
- VGA to Monitor Cable Connection
- VGA to Insignia Adapter Connection
- HDMI to Insignia Adapter Connection
- HDMI to PC Cable Connection
Thus, you’ll need two separate cables (a VGA and an HDMI) to fill out the ports of your Insignia adapter.
These two cables will separately connect to your monitor (the VGA) and the back of your PC or laptop’s port (the HDMI).
The conversion of the signal will happen in the Insignia Adapter’s body, as long as the connection is secure. After that, the transfer will happen at the port on the back of your PC.
Note: As you upgrade the analog VGA signal, you’ll see major improvement on the HDMI.
Solution #2 Use the Correct VGA Input Port
Chances are that you’ve messed up the VGA port connection on the back of your PC or laptop.
Since there are many identical-looking VGA ports (both on your PC and monitor), plugging the VGA end of the adapter incorrectly will also interrupt the signal.
- This applies to connecting a VGA monitor to HDMI PC and vice versa!
Here’s how to correct the VGA Input port where the Insignia Adapter connects:
VGA (PC) to HDMI (Monitor) Connection:
- Disconnect the VGA cable from the back of your PC.
- Search for a Blue Port with a trapezoid form.
- Connect the VGA cable there.
VGA (Monitor) to HDMI (PC) Connection:
- Unplug the VGA cable from your monitor.
- Turn the device upside down and take a look at all of the ports.
- Connect the VGA cable to one of the available VGA inputs.
Alert: Make sure that the VGA Cable is securely connected to your PC/monitor.
Solution #3 Connect the Adapter’s External Power Cable
Older types of Insignia VGA-to-HDMI adapters have an external USB/micro USB cable for additional power supply.
If you haven’t connected the adapter’s power cable to one of the USB ports on your computer or laptop, the device will not work either.
Follow these instructions to connect the adapter’s external power cable:
- Sort out all of the adapter’s cables.
- Find the microUSB for the full-size USB cable of the adapter.
- Once you have the cable in hand, connect it to a USB port on your PC/laptop.
- Wait for the LED light of the adapter to blink up.
The older Insignia Adapters that do have an external power cable, also come with a power indicator (a LED light).
As soon as there is power flowing through the device, the LED is supposed to blink as an indication that the device is working normally.
This’ll also enable the analog signal to be converted to an HDMI signal or the other way around.
Note: The USB thread of the adapter usually comes out of the solid part of the device.
Solution #4 Restart your Computer
Perhaps, your computer is having issues registering the adapter or converting the signal.
A quick way to take care of this problem is to restart your laptop or desktop computer to refresh the signal that is supposedly going through the adapter.
It’ll cause all services of the computer to reload and re-detect the signal of the Insignia HDMI-to-VGA adapter.
Follow these steps to restart your computer or laptop:
- Press the Windows Button on your keyboard.
- On the Windows menu that appeared, press the Power Icon.
- Select the “Restart” button.
- Wait for your computer to complete a restart…
Another easy way to restart your device is to hold the Power Button for 10-15 seconds, especially for laptops.
By nature, you wouldn’t harm a laptop by restarting it directly from the power button, but using the software method on desktop PCs is more reliable and healthy.
Note: Once your PC has restarted, check if the Insignia Adapter is being added.
Solution #5 Check the Monitor’s Power Connection
If your monitor is still failing to display the converted signal, it’s probably a power issue with the device itself.
We would recommend reconnecting your monitor from the power, to power cycle its hardware and settle any underlying glitches with the signal of the device.
- You should also check the power source of the monitor!
Follow these instructions to power cycle/hard reset your monitor in easy steps:
- Press the Power Button on your monitor to shut it down.
- Disconnect the Power Cable of the device, from the source.
- Hold the power button of the monitor for 30 more seconds.
- Do not interact with the device for the next 5 minutes.
- Re-attach the monitor’s cord to the power source.
- Turn on the device.
After rebooting your monitor and reconnecting it from the electrical outlet, turn on the device and check if the signal will be transferred now. Make sure that your PC is running as well.
Note: If you detect any cuts, rips, or damages on the monitor’s power cable, replace it.
Solution #6 Replace the Defect Cable
If your Insignia Adapter is still failing to work by the time you’re reading this, chances are that one of the cables in the setup has gone faulty.
Assuming you’re using a brand new Insignia HDMI to VGA adapter, it’s either the VGA or HDMI cable that has gone faulty.
The most appropriate way to detect the faulty cable is to use it as a standalone connection.
That means you must connect the HDMI and the VGA cable directly to two sources and determine which one of the cables is failing to transmit a signal.
- Since HDMI cables also transfer sound, audio distortions also indicate a fault.
As for the VGA cable, you’ll need an old monitor, as well as an old laptop or PC with a video card that has a VGA, and test things out.
Based on which one of the cables is failing to work, replace it with a brand new one.
Tip: If possible, test the Insignia Adapter with another set of HDMI/VGA cables!
