Here is a list of the most common causes for your Hunter fan not working:

Depleted Batteries

When the batteries of your remote control deplete with use, your Hunter fan won’t respond to any commands.

Your Fan Is Not Receiving Power

All homes have a circuit breaker that protects appliances from power surges. Sometimes it can disable your Hunter fan power.

Weak Signal

a weak signal

If your remote control has a faulty IR transmitter, it won’t work even with new batteries.

Stuck Button

When your remote control has a stuck button, it will repeatedly send the same commands.

Wrong Frequency

If your Hunter fan is improperly set up, it won’t receive any commands from your remote control.

Defective Remote Control

If there is physical damage to the remote or it came with a factory defect, you might need to exchange it for a new one.

When your Hunter fan is not working, the issue is either within the remote control device, with your Hunter fan or with its power switch.

For best results, please follow our solutions below in the given order, and don’t skip over any of them.

Solution #1 Replace Your Remote Control Batteries

If your Hunter fan is not responding at all to your remote controller inputs or only works at extremely close range, then your batteries might need replacing.

  1. Open the back side battery case of your remote
  2. Remove the old batteries and replace them with brand-new ones
  3. Ensure the batteries are firmly placed, then put the cover panel back on

Try using your remote again to control your Hunter ceiling fan.

If your remote still won’t work after following our solutions, it’s highly probable that your remote control is defective.

Note: To check if your remote infrared light is working, point it toward a smartphone camera and see if any light appears on your display. If the light is continuous, you might have stuck buttons.

Solution #2 Check Your Power Switch And Circuit Breaker

check the circuit breaker

If your Hunter fan is not responding to your remote control signals, then you should start by verifying that the fan itself is working correctly.

Here are the ways to check if your Hunter fan has power:

  • If you have a wall power switch for the Hunter fan, check that it’s turned on.
  • If your power switch is turned on, but you don’t receive any power, check that your circuit breaker is not restricting power to your fan.

After verifying that your fan is adequately powered on, try using your remote and see if it’s responding.

Note: Try moving the remote controller physically closer to your Hunter fan if it's not receiving commands.

Solution #3 Check Remote Control Signal

check remote signal

A common cause of the Hunter ceiling fan not responding to the remote is when your remote controller has a malfunctioning infrared light.

Your remote uses IR light to send commands to your Hunter fan; if it malfunctions, your fan won’t respond.

You will need your smartphone’s camera to check if your remote control IR light is working. IR light is not visible to the human eye, but digital cameras can detect it.

Here is how to check your remote for a faulty IR light:

  1. Get your smartphone and open the camera app
  2. Take your remote control for the Hunter fan and point it towards your camera
  3. Whilst looking at your phone’s screen, press your Hunter remote’s buttons
  4. Look for the light to appear on your phone’s screen
Note: If you notice that the light appearing on your phone screen is continuous, even without pressing any buttons, it means one of the remote's keys is stuck.

Solution #4 Set Fan Frequencies Differently

set the frequencies

If your fan is not responding to your remote control, chances are that your fan is set to the wrong frequency.

Your Hunter fan has a DIP unit that manually sets different frequencies for your device.

When you switch these settings up, there is a better chance that you can bypass issues with the old frequency settings for your remote.

Here are the steps to change your Hunter fan’s frequency settings:

  1. Turn off any power to the fan from the circuit breaker
  2. Use a suitable screwdriver to remove the protective fan panel for its electronics
  3. Find and take hold of the DIP switch module on the receiver
  4. Use a metal pen or a thin screwdriver to set the DIP to new frequencies
  5. Record your new DIP switch settings on a piece of paper
  6. Reattach the fan protective cover and secure it back via the screws

Now that you have performed these steps check to see if your Remote can send signals again.

If it is not configured correctly to the new frequency, the following solution will fix that issue.

Note: The DIP uses a combination of three or more switches that can produce different frequency combinations.

Solution #5 Pair Your Remote Control To The Fan Again

pair remote to the fan

Once you have a new remote control for your Hunter fan, it needs to be paired to the fan before use.

If the remote was incorrectly set up or disconnected from your Hunter fan, it must be paired again.

Please note that the steps below are general guidelines, as they may vary depending on your remote control model and Hunter fan setup.

Here are the general steps to pair your Hunter fan with a remote:

  1. Remove your remote control’s battery cover and locate the pair button
  2. Turn off your fan using the power switch on your wall
  3. Let the fan stay powered down for at least 10 seconds
  4. Turn On your Hunter fan again using the power switch
  5. Press and quickly release the pair button on your remote

The button for pairing uses a toggle command which means that it can be used in the same way to unpair your remote.

After performing these steps, check if your Hunter fan is now properly receiving inputs from your remote. If it still doesn’t, repeat these steps a few more times.

Note: These steps must be performed within 3 minutes of each other for the pairing to occur after power cycling your fan successfully.
