How to turn on Hunter fan without remote? Whatever your reason for wanting a different approach when turning on your Hunter fan, you will be amazed by learning that Hunter fans can be controlled in many ways.
Turning your Hunter fan without a remote can include many different methods, the most popular being a wall switch provided by Hunter. Other options include – a “pull chain” and connecting your SimpleConnect fan to HomeKit or Alexa.
While connecting to HomeKit and Alexa are hassle-free options, those might not be available if your Hunter fan is not among the SimpleConnect models.
In such a case, we will help you get around the other options: installing a pull fan or receiver with the wall switch.
How To Turn On Hunter Fan Without Remote
How to turn on Hunter ceiling fan without remote? You might want to ditch the remote control for many reasons, or perhaps yours started failing, and you need a quick alternative.
Although the remote is very convenient, some people can forget where the remote is or the remote might fail.
In that case, it would be better to control the ceiling fan with an alternative, such as a wall switch, a pull chain, or a phone app.
Methods To Turn On The Hunter Fan Without Remote
Let’s check each method for turning on the Hunter fan without needing its remote control. Then, we will look at perks, disadvantages, and, most importantly, how to do it.
Remember you can also use different methods as a complement to your living room.
That way, you can simply turn the fan on or off with whatever is closer, making fan managing very versatile.
Method #1: Use A Pull Chain
Some Hunter ceiling fans have a pull chain connected to their internal wiring.
Such a pull chain is easy to use when you don’t have access to the remote or don’t want to use it.
However, when a pull chain is not readily available, you can install it.
What You Need To Install A Pull Chain
You will need a few items to turn your Hunter fan into a pull chain fan:
- Measure tape
- Ladder
- Link cord/pull cord (available at retailers)
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
Beyond the items above, it is also important that you have a bit of electrical expertise. If you don’t have any, then it is better not to try to deal with the fan’s wiring.
After all, you could damage stuff without knowing what to fix later.
Installing The Pull Chain – Step By Step
Supposing you are secure about your electrical skills, start with the following:
- Grab the measuring tape
- Place the ladder under the fan and climb it
- Use the measuring tape to determine how long the pull cord should be
- Buy a pull cord with that measurement/make the pull cord you bought have such a measurement
Suppose this is your first time installing a pull cord/chain. In that case, noticing that the pull cord itself doesn’t conduct electricity is important.
It is only attached to the fan’s internal switch. That means a pull cord is very safe.
The next step is:
- Turn off the electric power
- Disassemble the fan’s casing
- Find the internal pull switch
- Push the cord’s end into the lug of the pull switch
- Press the lug and cord together with pliers
- Insert the other end of the pull cord into its knob
How To Use The Pull Chain
Using the pull chain on the fan will vary from model to model. Generally, ceiling fans have up to three speeds.
That means you must pull the cord each time to adjust the desired speed.
Pulling a fourth time should turn the fan off. However, as we’ve said, each fan has its different configurations.
Therefore, when you open the switch casing, you should note how it works so you will have a good idea of how it will behave with the pull chain.
Method #2: Use A Wall Switch
Since you are using a Hunter fan, you might be surprised to learn how different Hunter wall switches work.
A few Hunter fans might come with a built-in receiver compatible with some wall switch models.
Other times, however, you must buy the universal wall switch with a receiver you must install.
Equipment Needed
To help you install safely and without hassle, we will first list all the equipment you might need:
- A screwdriver with a Phillips’s head
- Tools for cutting wires
- A ladder or a step stool
- Voltage measuring instrument
- Screw terminals
Make Room For The Receiver
These are the first steps:
- Unplug the electrical connection to the junction box.
- With a Phillips screwdriver, remove the fan’s canopy screws.
You must trace the wires connecting your ceiling fan, remote, receiver, ceiling mount, and electrical box.
Once you know the power is down, remove the wire nuts for every cable except the grounding ones.
Tip: A voltage meter can indicate whether or not power is flowing via the wires.
Install The Receiver
For the next steps, use a wire nut:
- Join the white wires from the ceiling, the fan, and the receiver.
- Link the receiver’s grounding terminal to the ceiling’s black wire.
- Link the receiver’s blue wire to the fan’s blue wire (both are non-grounded).
- Assemble the fan’s black (ungrounded) wire with the receiver’s yellow (ground) wire.
- Cap all wires, regardless of whether or not they are linked to another wire.
Place the wires into the ceiling box carefully, keeping the grounded wires apart from the others and turning the wire nuts in a clockwise direction.
Slide the receiver into the opening with the vents facing down, then replace the canopy and tighten the screws.
Put in place as shown in the manual’s diagram.
How To Use The Wall Switch
If you’ve bought a package including the wall switch and the receiver, they are already paired out of the box.
Thus, you must install the wall switch like any other regular switch and start controlling the fan.
Method #3: Use HomeKit
If your fan is among the SimpleConnect line, then you can connect it to your HomeKit environment.
Doing that is simple:
- Open the Home app
- Tap the “+” icon
- Select “Add Accessory”
- Tap “Don’t Have a Code or Can’t Scan?”
- Scroll down to the “Other” section
- Find “Hunter Douglas” and tap it
- Enter your Hunter SimpleConnect credentials
- Select the Hunter SimpleConnect fan that will be added
- Follow the next prompts
Now you can control your Hunter ceiling fan through any of your Apple devices.
You can also assign Siri voice commands and allow family members to control the fan.
Method #4: Use Alexa
Alexa is a popular smart assistant compatible with almost everything. Fortunately, it is also compatible with the Hunter SimpleConnect fans.
Such fans are smart devices with a dedicated app, but you can make them even more interesting with Alexa.
- Open the Amazon Alexa app
- Tap the menu icon
- Select “Smart Home”
- Tap “Devices”
- Select the “+” icon
- Tap “Add Device”
- Select “Fan”
- Find “Hunter Fan Company” and tap it
- Enter your Hunter SimpleConnect credentials
- Select the Hunter SimpleConnect fan that will be added
- Follow the next prompts
When your fan is added to your Alexa account, you can control it through the Alexa app on any of your devices.
Moreover, you can also control it via voice commands.
Note: Alexa has some pre-built voice commands that you can test, but you can also create your own, as well as set routines, schedules, scenes, etc.
