How to connect Nanit to hotel WiFi? Nanit is a smart camera that, in addition to monitoring images, can pass reports on the baby’s sleep period through an app.
If you are going to a hotel with your baby, you might wonder how you can bring the Nanit together and monitor your baby’s sleep.
Unfortunately, if you are having issues with that, you are not the first.
The best method to connect the Nanit system to a hotel’s WiFi is using a travel router to connect to the hotel WiFi and then create your restricted network.
Keep reading to learn why Nanit causes trouble and how to set up everything nicely.
Why Is It Difficult To Use Nanit In The Hotel?
Installing Nanit is easy when you are home, especially if you are the type of person that deals with network settings all the time.
However, if you travel a lot and take the baby along, installing Nanit in a hotel’s network might become a headache.
Why is that?
Reason #1: You Are Not Controlling The Network
Suppose you are out of your home and depending on someone else’s network.
The obvious problem with certain applications is that you are not the one controlling traffic and its settings.
So, for example, if you need certain permissions or certain info to install your Nanit properly (beyond just the network’s password), this already drags the process.
Moreover, the network’s owner might change some settings at any time, thus disconnecting your Nanit system.
Reason #2: Your Nanit Can Be Hacked
Being hacked is the most concerning thing for parents taking care of their children.
But, unfortunately, that is a risk when using a shared network such as a hotel’s.
It is uncommon for Nanit cameras to get hacked, but it can happen, and it is something you should keep in mind.
Signs your Nanit has been hacked include:
- The camera has been rotated or moved.
- Blinking LED lights.
- Weird noises or voices are coming from the camera.
- Settings have been changed.
Reason #3: Less Than 2Mbps Bandwidth
Okay, we all know less than 2Mbps networks are laughable nowadays.
However, suppose the hotel’s connection is not very good, and many people are connected simultaneously.
In that case, your Nanit might not work very well.
That is certainly a minor issue if you check into a hotel you know has good internet.
Reason #4: Captive Portal Networks
Many hotels have captive portals, which you must go through before accessing their WiFi.
Because of that, Nanit has some difficulty accessing such networks.
To be honest, this is the top reason that makes it hard to connect your Nanit system to the hotel’s network. So that is the issue we will be tackling more directly.
How To Connect Nanit To Hotel WiFi?
You already know you might face issues trying to connect Nanit to hotel WiFi. Now it is time to check the easiest ways to make it work.
Because, yes, you can make it work. A travel router will be your lifesaver in most methods we teach you.
Method 1: Travel Router As Access Point
First, you must buy a travel router. Wireless travel routers are tiny, compact, and USB-rechargeable.
You can choose to power them from your computer or a power outlet.
We recommend you buy the TP-Link AC750 Wireless Portable Nano Travel Router. Its setup is easy, as we will teach you below.
Note: A travel router is a secure option for Nanit because no one will be able to meddle with your network. At the same time, you can take advantage of the hotel's WiFi.
Step #1: Setting Up
The Access Point mode requires an Ethernet cable. If you are in a hotel room with no Ethernet connection, skip to the next method.
The basic things you need to do are:
- Connect the router to a power source and turn it on
- The operation mode must be AP/Rng Ext/Client
- Connect the Ethernet cable
Now you can start turning your travel router into an Access Point. Connect your device to the new network (name and password are on the router’s label) and follow the steps:
- Launch a web browser and enter http://tplinkwifi.net in the address bar.
- Log in with “admin” (in lowercase) for username and password.
- Click Quick Setup to start the configuration.
- Select your Time Zone and Next.
- Choose Access Point and Next.
- Choose your Network Name and Password for the 2.4GHz/5GHz, then click Next
- Select the LAN type of the router (Smart IP in most cases) and click Next.
- Click Save to apply the configurations.
Note: You can use this method with a laptop or smartphone. What matters is that you can create a network using your travel router.
Step #2: Connect Nanit
Now that your network is set up, you can connect Nanit. Connecting your Nanit to a new network is no trouble:
- On the Nanit app, find Settings
- Choose the right camera
- Click Advanced
- Click pair/repair
- Follow the instructions and enter the credentials of the network you just set up
Now your Nanit will be in a safe network!
Method 2: Travel Router In Hotspot Mode
Turning your Travel Router into a hotspot will be the best method if no Ethernet connection is available in your hotel room.
This method solves two problems:
- Unprotected networks
- Captive portals
First, make sure your router is in Share Hotspot mode. Then, plug it into a power source (the wall or your laptop).
Now, turn it on and connect your device to the new network (name and password are on the router’s label).
Next:
- Access http://tplinkwifi.net from the device connected
- Type “admin” both for user and password
- Choose Quick Setup, then Time Zone, and Next.
- Select WAN Connection Type (recommended: Dynamic).
- Choose 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz.
- Survey to find the hotel network and connect to it.
- Choose a new name and password for your router if you want
- Save
Now you are ready to connect your Nanit system to the new network. For that, use the same method explained at the end of Method #1.
Method 3: Traveler’s WiFi
Travelers WiFi is a portable router that is the size of a cell phone and works in over 100 countries. It partners with local operators in each destination where it offers coverage.
The device entitles you to 2 GB of fast internet per day in European territory, 500 MB in any other country, or unlimited in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
You can still use the WiFi network when you go over the limit but at a greatly reduced speed.
Renting Traveler WiFi is very simple. Just go to their website, choose between the “Switzerland” or “Global” tab (depending on the destination of the trip), and enter the rental date, destination, and pick-up address.
When you receive your portable router:
- Push the button of the router to turn it on.
- Locate the network on your device (laptop or phone).
- Connect using the credentials informed by Travelers WiFi.
- Now, connect your Nanit too.
Travelers’ WiFi is useful if you are in a hotel where the connection is terrible.
Moreover, the device’s battery can last up to 13 hours before you need to recharge.
Tip: This method is the most reliable if you are journeying through Europe (especially Switzerland) with your family.
Frequently Asked Questions
How to Connect Nanit to Hotel WiFi without a Password?
The Nanit system is configured so that it won’t allow you to connect to an unprotected network.
So, for example, registering in a hotel with open WiFi (no password required) won’t allow you to connect your Nanit directly.
The methods we taught can help you with that since you will create a network that requires a password.
Then, your network will be safe, and your Nanit will accept connecting to it.
2.4Ghz or 5Ghz?
When you configure your router with the main goal of using Nanit, you must choose the best frequency for the system.
According to the Nanit site, the Original Nanit camera works better with a 2.4Ghz network.
However, Nanit Plus and Nanit Pro work better with a 5Ghz connection.
Note: 5GHz is faster than 2.4Ghz but has less reach. Still, some devices work better with 2.4Ghz if the manufacturer designed it that way.
