The Honeywell thermostat black screen issue is mainly caused by a power failure. This happened due to loose wiring on the base or HVAC panel, blown fuse, dead batteries, a loose thermostat panel, or any activated safety control. A thorough inspection is required.
Let’s now discuss effective troubleshooting methods to fix the thermostat’s black screen!
Honeywell Home Pro Series Thermostat Blank Screen – Fixed
If the display on your Honeywell thermostat is black, it is most likely not receiving power due to a loose wire or a faulty component.
Make sure you follow all of the methods and their steps from the guide as described in order to troubleshoot this issue and quickly address it properly.
Quick Tip:
You might not be able to see anything on your thermostat’s blank screen because it is off or has a low brightness setting, which would be why it seems to be blank to you.
Before continuing, make sure your device is turned on, and then try increasing the screen brightness!

Solution #1 Check Power Supply!
One of the most frequent causes of thermostat black screens is power outages!
This is when the device can’t charge its battery and therefore go dead before the power comes back.
However, if there is insufficient power after the outage, it won’t charge and the display won’t turn on!
Here is how you can power cycle the thermostat:
- Flip over your home HVAC or thermostat power breaker.
- Make sure the wires connectors of the thermostat are properly connected.
- Wait up to two minutes with the thermostat disconnected.
- Flip down the power breaker.
- Make sure the breaker has no fault and does not trip when you turn it on.
- Next, press and hold the ring button on the thermostat to turn it on.
After rebooting the thermostat if it still won’t turn on, then you need to check the wiring!
Solution #2 Inspect Thermostat Wiring
The thermostat base wirings are the next thing you should check. There is a possibility that the thermostat wires are connected incorrectly or may be loosely attached.
That is why the HVAC system is not powering the thermostat and the display remains black.
Solution: You must thoroughly inspect the wiring, on the thermostat end and the HVAC panel.
Here is how you can inspect thermostat base wirings:
- Turn off the thermostat power from the HVAC breaker.
- Remove the thermostat display screen from its base.
- Disconnect all wires from the connectors by pushing them up and noting the orientation.
- Make sure the wire strips are fine and have no faults.
- Connect the Rh and Rc wires in the R-named connector.
- Also, connect the other wires to their appropriate terminals.
- Use the name allocation to connect the wires.
- Make sure to properly tighten all the wires in the base.
- Connect back the thermostat properly with its base.
You must check the HVAC panel for thermostat wiring once you have tightened the thermostat wires.
Locate the thermostat wires that have the same name, look, and color as the thermostat wires, and then firmly reconnect them.
Test the thermostat whether the blank screen is gone after turning on the power breaker!
Solution #3 Check Safety Switches
When the thermostat temperature exceeds the appropriate level, its safety feature turns it off automatically and that’s why your Honeywell home pro series blank screen.
Aside from this safety feature, there are many other safety switches installed on your home HVAC panel, that trip when any unsafe activity happens for devices.
All you have to do is inspect your HVAC panel for any tripped or faulty switch stopping the power supply!
Here is how you can check HVAC for tripped safety switches:
- Navigate to your home HVAC system.
- Open the panel control panel door.
- Locate the High Limit Temperature and Float switches from the controller.
- Turn back switches on if they are tripped off.
- Go back and check whether the thermostat blank screen goes.
Note: In case of tripped switches, make sure to contact the technician, because automatically switch tripping is an indication of any fault!
Solution #4 Refix The Thermostat Panel
If you have performed the methods above but your Honeywell thermostat’s screen is still black, it’s possible that you improperly installed the display.
You must now connect the panel to the base once again and make sure that it’s properly attached.
Here is how you can refix the thermostat display panel:
- Turn off the HVAC power breaker.
- Then, remove the display panel from the base.
- Now again, mount the panel to its base by pressing and holding.
- Hold until you hear an activation sound.
Note: Make sure to press the panel, it is the area around the display screen of the thermostat.
Solution #5 Check The Furnace Door
Sometimes the furnace door is behind this mess because the thermostat is very sensitive and stops working if something went wrong.
There might be a possibility that the furnace door is open or turned off and that’s why it is not working.
In turn, the Honeywell home pro series screen blank and the only thing you need to do is to make sure that the furnace door is closed properly and turned on.

Solution #6 Replace Blown Fuse
As we have already discussed, the thermostat screen goes blank due to a power failure!
As you have already checked the thermostat and HVAC system wires, everything is in order but the issue is still not gone.
There might be a possibility that the Honeywell thermostat fuse is blown and that’s why it is unable to get a power supply.
You only need to replace the blown fuse!
Here is how to replace the thermostat fuse:
- Turn off the power from HVAC.
- Use a screwdriver to unscrew the thermostat’s lower compartment.
- Locate the fuse from the control board and push it out.
- Use a multimeter to test it first for continuity.
- Replace the blown fuse with a new one after ensuring it is blown.
- Tightly screw the control board.
- Turn on the power to check whether the screen comes back.
Note: Honeywell thermostats usually have a fuse between 3-5 Amp.
Solution #7 Replace The Batteries
Dead batteries in the thermostat are the most crucial factor you cannot ignore if your screen is blank.
When the batteries in your thermostat are completely dead, even if it warns you by showing a low battery warning, it’s possible that you didn’t notice!
Changing the thermostat batteries or realigning the thermostat is all you have to do!
Here is how you can replace thermostat batteries:
- Locate the little tab at the side of the thermostat, and then push it out.
- Then carefully take out both batteries from the cover.
- Place the new batteries by inserting them in the correct location!
- Insert the battery pack into the thermostat by pushing it in.
