Can the Ring Doorbell get wet? Of course, every device, the outdoor security devices are often exposed to rainfall and snow but do not seem to bother users at all.
In this guide, we’ll learn what water-resistant is and whether the Ring Doorbell is waterproof which is completely different.
Let’s learn more!
The Ring Doorbell devices often get wet but this does not impact their functionality. The doorbells and security cameras are water-resistant devices and can withstand normal weather conditions such as rain and snow, but should not be submerged under water.
Let’s first learn the difference between water-resistant and waterproof!
Are Ring Doorbells Waterproof?
Water resistance means that the device can be installed outside, designed to be often wet because of rain, thunderstorm, wind, and snow.
In contrast, waterproof means that the device can be used underwater, which our Ring Doorbell security device does not support.
The Ring Doorbell is NOT waterproof and should not be submerged underwater!
However, the device won’t allow water to get inside due its water-resistant design and it’s safe from SpringerLink water all the way up to a furious thunderstorm.
The design protects the device from the water but when it comes to wind, the installation attachment is what matters the most!
Tip: Install the doorbell under a shed or something to prevent direct exposure!
How Often Can the Ring Doorbell Get Wet?
How often, does not matter, instead the question is “how wet?”. Even with a water-resistant design, exposing your device directly to the rain is not a good idea.
Most people prefer their Ring Doorbells to be completely dry, even if the device is prepared to resist water drops.
As long as the Ring Doorbell is not submerged under the water the device is safe!
The doorbell’s camera is also considered water-resistant and not waterproof which means that the unit will continue to operate normally even under the rain.
The design is made to last for years and you should not be too concerned about the Ring Doorbell’s functionality.
How To Waterproof A Ring Doorbell?
When you’re a new user, all that comes to mind after your device gets wet due to rain is how to protect it.
As we’ve already discussed the Ring Doorbell is water-resistant which makes the device withstand even heavy rain, users can still take precautions to protect the device!
Here are some ways to protect a Ring Doorbell from the rain:
1. Get A Weather Blocking Mount
There are various weather-blocking (anti-glare) doorbell mounts that you can purchase for your Ring device and protect the device not only from the rain but also from the sun’s heat.
The mount is basically a little hat (shed) on top of the device completely covering the upper side.
That prevents rain from directly impacting the device, therefore making the device even more protected.
This method combined with the water resistance makes the setup long-lasting!
2. Create/Buy A Rain Shield
Another inexpensive alternative is to create a homemade cover for your Ring Doorbell, by using a piece of wood, plastic, or metal.
Simply install the cover on top of your Ring Doorbell which will protect the device from direct rainfall. The cover does not have to be big.
On the other hand, there is always the possibility of acquiring a Rain Shield, which you’ve most probably seen on street (public) telephones.
It’s not expensive at $12 – $25 online!
3. Waterproof The Device!
Even if you can’t make your device completely waterproof you can use acrylic material or simply silicone to fill up ALL small openings and gaps.
This is what will essentially protect the device from water reaching the motherboard.
Keep in mind that we can’t guarantee this will work, but we’ve found many people using this method so we’ve decided to include this as well.
Even that water-resistant device remains the reason why the device keeps functioning in harsh weather conditions.
4. Relocate The Device!
The safest option to prepare your outdoor device for weather conditions is a good location of the mounting bracket.
In most cases, the door case provides a good, covered spot for the installation of a 5.1 x 2.4 x 1.1-inch device.
Select a dry and covered spot to install the Ring Doorbell.
Note: Users report that their Ring Doorbell withstood extremely freezing temperatures and wet environment for years!
Ring Doorbell Got Wet – What To Do?
It might be one of the rarest occasions to submerge a Ring Doorbell underwater or the device suddenly stops working after a rainfall.
Assuming that the device’s water resistance has been breached, the internet hardware components are wet, so there is a quick and easy solution!
Here’s what to do when your Ring Doorbell is too wet and not working:
- Detach the Ring Doorbell from the mounting bracket.
- Position the device face-down.
- Undo the 2 x bottom security screws.
- Remove the 4 x back-side panel screws.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the back panel.
- The battery will also go out with the back panel (it’s glued).
- You can then pull the battery free from the panel.
- Then you can disconnect the battery from the circuit.
Now when the Doorbell is disassembled, leave the components separated on a dry surface for several hours.
This will also power cycle the device and after putting everything back together the device should start functioning. Scroll up to find ways to protect the device from water.
Note: Don’t forget to plug back the battery in the circuit before screwing the back panel!
Ring Doorbell Elements Protection!
In case for any reason your Doorbell was impacted and you need to prevent this in the future, we’re going to review how to protect our device from the weather.
Let’s jump right in!
Rain:
Use a protective cover or relocate the Ring Doorbell to a dry location.
Water shields are available online and utilize a bunch of different designs that users can select from and bring some style as well as security for their devices under the rain.
Sunlight:
The only way is to cast a shadow on the Ring Doorbell device.
During the hot supper seasons when the temperatures are high, direct sunlight can sometimes be why our doorbell overheats.
Covering the device under the shadow is the best option!
Extreme Heat & Cold:
The battery of your Ring Doorbell can withstand -5 degrees Fahrenheit, therefore it’s safe to stay outside even during the winter.
However, when the device is hooked up to the AC line, therefore not operating with a battery, even lower temperatures can’t impact the functionality.
Wind:
Furious wind during a thunderstorm with a combination of rain can be harsh towards the Ring Doorbell and strong installation and a cover would be the best option possible.
Everything can be entirely homemade so feel free to protect your device from harsh weather conditions!
Ring Doorbell In A Glass Box?
We can’t complete our guide without mentioning this.
Did you know that there is an ultimate solution to any kind of weather impact on your Ring Doorbell? Put the device in a glass box!
The transparent boxes can sometimes fit with the motion detection, therefore the functionality might not be impacted.
But surely, the box will keep the device warm and water free all the time.
A human hand can easily reach in to ring the doorbell which makes this the ultimate solution!
Tip: The PIR sensor will not work with non-transparent covering boxes!
Quick Recap:
Thus, the Ring Doorbell can get wet but not submerged under water. We’ve learned that rainfall and snow cannot impact our outdoor device but there are a few ways to soften the impact. We can use protective doorbell covers or create our own to keep our device dry!
Final Thoughts:
Now that we’ve learned can the Ring Doorbell get wet we know that exposing our device to rain is not lethal?
The majority of reports are related to overheating when the device is exposed to direct sunlight, which is a bit more concerning and requires a few extra steps.
We recommend using a rain shield for better protection.
We hope that this post was helpful and that you’ve learned something new. Good Luck!
