How To Program Lutron Light Switch – All You Need To Know
Lutron offers a wide range of products, even when talking about switches and dimmers.
Many products in that category can be used either as dimmers or switches, which we will tackle in this article.
It is essential to notice that Lutron’s products work with many different software/protocols.
The best option is to stick to switches designed to work with the Caseta protocol.
Lutron switches that work on the Caseta protocol can be identified at retailers because “Caseta Wireless” is written on their boxes.
What You Need To Program Lutron Switches
How to program a Lutron light switch? Here we will discuss the programming for the Caseta range of switches.
They work through the Lutron app, allowing certain freedom to create scenes and schedules.
Here is what you will need:

According to Lutron, no device should be more than 30ft away from the Smart Bridge.
First, you need to prepare the app:
- Open the Lutron App
- Tap the “Menu” button
- Select “Devices”
- Tap the “+” button
- Select the device type (Switch)
- Assign the correct room

- The app will discover your device
- Choose your device
- Name the switch
- Click “Next” and “Done” on the following prompts
How To Program Each Lutron Switch Feature
Lutron switches that use the Caseta protocol are benefitted from a wonderful variety of features.
For example, Lutron smart switch programming allows you to set schedules, create scenes, allow geofencing, select dimming options, and even tweak motion-sensing capabilities.
Note: Remember that not all switches can be used to program all of the features discussed below.
For example, if your switch doesn’t have a motion sensor, it is impossible to configure that feature on it.
Feature #1: Set A Schedule
After you have one or more switches added to the Lutron app, you can set up schedules involving them.
Such a function can light up a room at the right time, for example.
- Open the Lutron App
- Tap the “Schedules” icon
- Tap the “+” button
- Name the schedule
- Assign a room
- Choose the devices to be included in the schedule
- You can choose the days, times, and duration of the schedule
- Remember to click “Save.”
Feature #2: Create A Scene
Different from a schedule, a scene will make a room shine with certain colors, a certain pattern, and any other options available for the switch and lights kit you have.
- Open the Lutron App
- Tap the “Scenes” icon
- Tap the “+” button
- Name the scene
- Assign a room
- Select the devices to be included
- Tap “Save”
- Customize settings (they will change depending on the devices you have)
- Tap “Save” again
Note: A Scene is helpful to set the mood in a particular room or environment.
For example, you can set a light scene in your office that helps you focus while working and set a more relaxing scene in your living room.
Feature #3: Configure Geofencing
Geofence is a smart feature that requires you to have the phone connected to the internet while out of the home.
So, for example, one effect of the geofence might be that you will walk home, and the lights will already be on.
- Open the Lutron App
- Tap the “Settings” icon
- Select “Geofencing”
- Tap the “Add Geofence” button
- Select the location to center the geofence
- Adjust the size of the geofence
- Choose which action should trigger for entering/leaving the geofence
- Tap “Save”
Note: Geofencing is excellent for outdoor lights, especially when you come home at night.
Feature #4: Control The Dimming
Not all the Lutron light switches have a dimmer, but when they have, you can control the dimmer through the Lutron app.
More than controlling it, you can program a few dimming features.
- Open the Lutron App
- Tap the “Devices” icon
- Select the correct room
- Choose the switch
- You will see a slider that allows you to dim or brighten the lights
Program The Dimming
But dimming and brightening are not the only options.
Depending on the devices you have installed, you will have these features too:
✅ Fade Time
This feature allows you to set a routine for dimming and brightening. The fading could last only a few seconds or many minutes.
✅ Minimum Brightness
When dimming the lights, there is a minimum brightness which is up to you to choose.
✅ Favorite Level
Simply choose what’s your preferred brightness level. That way, whenever you play with the settings, you can quickly return to your favorite.
Once you have customized the dimming features of your switch, tap “Save” to apply the changes.
Tip: Lutron switch's dimming features are great to create the most personalized experience.
It can also function with schedules and scenes. That way, you can make the perfect environment for watching movies or throwing a party.
Feature #5: Adjust the Motion Sensor
How to program the Lutron motion sensor light switch? A great feature offered by some Lutron switches is the motion sensor.
That means if its main feature is enabled, it will turn on the room’s lights whenever you approach.
It is also possible to control how long the lights will remain after everyone leaves the room.
When you pair the switch with the Lutron app, the motion sensor feature will be activated by default.
So here is how you can tweak it:
- Open the Lutron App
- Tap the “Devices” icon
- Select the switch’s room
- Tap on the switch you want to configure
Motion Sensor Capabilities
On the next screen, you will see a list of settings you can customize for your motion sensor switch.
These may include:
Timeout
It controls how many seconds or minutes the lights will keep on once the sensor detects no one is in the room.
Occupancy/Vacancy
It is possible to set the switch to detect such room states. If occupancy is detected, the lights are automatically turned on.
If it can only detect vacancy, lights must be turned on manually.
Sensitivity
This feature allows us to adjust how many meters the switch will detect activity and what level of activity should make the lights turn on.
Daylight Sensing
This is helpful to keep the lights out during the day, even when someone approaches the room.
As you can see, motion sensors have plenty of utilities nowadays, allowing you to have the most comfortable rooms in your house.
So after you’ve adjusted your preferred settings, you must tap “Save.”
Tip: If you have a motion sensor switch, the motion sensing feature can be included in Schedules and Scenes.
