How To Pair Lutron Caseta Switch? *Correctly*
In order to pair the Lutron Caseta switch to your Hub, you would need to have the mobile app set up and ready to go. Only then you can connect the Lutron Caseta dimmer to a bridge.
- Open the Lutron Caseta mobile app.
- Tap on Add Device in the top corner.
- Select the Lutron Caseta switch.
- Press and hold the down button on the switch.
- Wait until the LED blinks quickly.
- Select a Room as per your preference.
Tip: When pairing the Lutron Caseta switch, the mobile app always describes the steps!
How To Fix When Lutron Caseta Not Pairing?
Tip: Try ALL of the following troubleshooting ways to fix the pairing issue from your Lutron!
1. Inspect the Lutron Installation!
It is important to check that the Lutron Caseta device that you are trying to pair is not defective and that is a properly connected power source.
So, check the physical installation because maybe the switch’s wiring is loose and that’s why the device is not pairing.
Here is how to inspect the physical installation of the Lutron Caseta switch:
- Plugged the Lutron Caseta switch into the socket.
- Turn ON the switch and then turn it OFF.
- Check if the switch itself is working or not.
If the Lutron Caseta switch is working but not pairing, jump on to the next method. If the Lutron Caseta switch is not working, check the wiring connection to the switch.
How To Check the Lutron Caseta Switch Wiring?
- Turn off the Lutron Caseta switch.
- Flip over the circuit breaker (AC).
- Remove the switch faceplate.
- Ensure to expose all wires.
- The ground wire connects the wall box to the green wire on the switch.
- The black wire connects the wall box to the black wire on the switch.
- The red or white/red wire connects the wall box to the red wire on the switch.

The following are the compatible devices with Lutron Caseta:
- Amazon Alexa
- Apple Home Kit
- Google Assistant
- Nest
- SmartThings
- Sonos
- Logitech Harmony Remote
- Pico Remote Control
If you are trying to pair the switch with a compatible device, ensure that the other device is turned on and connected to the same network as the Lutron Caseta switch.
If the devices still do not pair, ensure that your internet is reliable and consistent before proceeding further.
Note: Lutron Caseta will not pair or connect with incompatible devices!
3. Reduce the Proximity!
Lutron Caseta devices are only paired with other devices or hubs within 30 feet of each other.
Check to make sure that your Lutron Caseta switch and other devices are within the range, and if they aren’t, reduce the distance between them.
Also, if the Lutron Caseta switch is set up in proximity to any other wireless devices, try turning off those devices temporarily to see if they are causing any interference.
Only then try to pair the Lutron Caseta switch again to see whether the switch will now be able to connect.
4. Check the Network Connection
The Lutron Caseta products do not require internet or WiFi to control the lights in your home but the internet is required during the initial setup.
Ensure that the smart hub or Lutron Caseta is connected to the same internet and that your Wi-Fi network is operational, fast, and stable.
Note: Weak or intermittent Wi-Fi signals can often cause pairing issues!
Here are the ways to check and optimize the WiFi connection:
- Move your WiFi router to a more central location in your home.
- Reboot your WiFi router by unplugging it for at least 30 seconds.
- Turn off or remove wireless devices near the Lutron switch.
- Disconnect unused devices from the wireless network.
- Connect the Lutron switch only to a 2.4 GHz WiFi.
Tip: Use your smartphone to test the speed of your wireless network and identify any issues!
5. Update the Lutron Hub Software!
It’s necessary to ensure that the Lutron hub is running the latest version of its software, as outdated versions often lead to pairing issues with other devices.
The updating operation is simple as you only need to have the mobile Lutron app installed.
Here is how to update the Lutron hub software version:
- Unplug the Lutron Caseta Hub or Main Repeater!
- Wait for 30 seconds and plug back into the power.
- Open the Lutron mobile app and go to Settings.
- Tap on “Advanced” and then on “Firmware Update“.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to begin the process.
- Wait for the end of the update completion process.
Note: When your Lutron Caseta Hub is updated, all other accessories will be up to date!
6. Inspect for Activated Routines
In case your lights are also added in Home apps such as Google Home or Alexa any active routers can prevent the Lutron Caseta to pair.
Perhaps that’s why Lutron Caseta switch not pairing with the lights so ensure that they are not in an activated routine!
Disable Routines in Google Home:
- Open the Google Home app.
- Navigate to the Home screen.
- Tap on the Routines tab.
- Select the Routine (If there is any)
- Turn off the Activate Routine.
- Then tap on the Save button.
Disable Routines in the Alexa App:
- Open the Amazon Alexa app.
- Tap on “Devices” from the menu.
- Select one of your lights device.
- Then choose “Create a Routine”.
- Ensure that there are no routines.
Note: It’s best to disconnect your lights from other home apps until the end of this guide!
7. Reset the Lutron Caseta Switch!
Resetting the device to factory settings will usually resolve the pairing and communication issues between devices.
So, all you have to do is factory reset your Lutron Caseta switch to clear all previous device pairings to restore the switch to its default settings.
Here is how to reset the Lutron Caseta switch:
- Press the ON button quickly 3 times from the switch.
- Wait until the status LED starts to flash slowly.
- Then release the button for only one second.
- Again, press the ON button 3 consecutive times.
- The Lutron Caseta switch will now start resetting.
When you’re ready with the reset, test whether the Lutron Caseta switch will not pair!
