Some TVs will allow LEDs to be connected and powered even in standby mode. Other times, you need a different power source for the LEDs. Further, you might need to use LEDs that don’t depend on IR frequency.

How To Keep LED Lights On When TV Is Off – Guide

Putting LED lights behind the TV is a creative approach to liven up your living room.

LED lights have the added benefit of reducing eye strain as you watch TV and look great. 

You also probably want the lights to keep glowing even when you turn the TV off.

That way, your living still has some light source during the night. But how can you do that?

Check below for a few methods.

Method #1: TV in Standby Mode

Simply switching to standby mode is like putting your TV to sleep without turning it off.

Consequently, you can turn it on considerably faster than if completely powered down, so you won’t miss the beginning of your favorite show if you hit the button.

When the TV is in sleep mode, it is not actively using any power.

Still, depending on the model, it may be powering a red notification light on an inbuilt digital clock.

The TV’s little power while in standby mode also powers other functions. Some models can even transmit data while in such a mode.

More than drawing power, some TVs in standby mode will also be able to generate power for connected devices. That is what matters to us today.

If your LED lights are connected to your TV, and you want to keep them on while the TV is off, do the following:

1. Find the Power button on your remote control
2. Turn the TV off
3. Don’t unplug the TV

Alert: Read your TV booklet to learn if it is safe to keep it in standby mode for long periods.

Method #2: Connect The LED Lights To Another Power Source

Perhaps your LED lights are connected to your TV and will turn off even when the TV is in standby mode.

That is certainly annoying if all you want is to keep LEDs on when the TV is off.

In that case, you need to treat the TV and the LED lights as two separate systems. In easier terms, you should disconnect the LED lights from the TV.

Now that your LED lights are disconnected from the TV, do the following:

1. Attach a power adapter to the LED lights
2. Plug that power adapter into a power source
3. Turn the LED lights on

Doing that will prevent your LED lights from turning off whenever you turn the TV off.

Moreover, you can unplug your TV if that is safer.

Method #3: Using Non-IR LED lights

Have you already tried the solutions above, and your LEDs keep going off when you turn the TV off? 

Maybe the problem is the technology used to turn your LEDs on and off. First, examine if your LED lights’ controller uses infrared.

If it does, it is possible that your TV’s controller is turning your LEDs and TV off together!

TV and LEDs Are Using The Same Signal

How does that happen, though? You might think such a thing should not happen since they are different devices.

The issue, though, is that manufacturers sometimes use very similar IR receptors for different products.

Then, what happens is that your LEDs receptor is using the same frequency as your TV and its remote controller.

So when you turn the TV off, the LEDs turn off too. 

The most effective solution for this issue is LED lights that don’t require IR.

There are plenty of Wi-Fi- and Bluetooth-controlled LED strips at common retailers.

Fixing The Issue

You might want to put LEDs with a different connectivity technology around your TV to prevent them from turning off. 

Once you buy Wi-Fi or Bluetooth-controlled LED lights, install them in place of the old ones.

Of course, you don’t need to throw the old ones in the trash. Instead, use them for another part of the house where the TV’s controller signal won’t reach.

Method #4: Use A Wi-Fi Adapter

Perhaps you diagnosed the situation and checked that your LED lights are erroneously receiving the signal from your TV remote controller.

However, you don’t want to buy new LED lights.

If that is the case, you can buy a Wi-Fi adapter for your LED lights. There are plenty of those on retailers.

The most common ones will function with the Magic Home Pro app. 

Plug the adapter into your LED strip lights at one end and a power source on the other.

After that:

1. Open the App Store/Play Store
2. Look for Magic Home Pro
3. Download it

Now on to adding the device:

1. Click the + at the upper right corner of the app
2. Select Add Device
3. Choose the device showing up
4. Select your Wi-Fi network and enter your credentials
5. Change the name of the adapter if you want

Now your LED lights will function independently of your TV! 

Note: It is still possible that lights will pick up the IR signal if they still have an IR receptor. However, you can turn them on again with the app.

Method #5: Use A Bluetooth Adapter

There are many Bluetooth adapters at online retailers.

After you buy one of them, you must plug one end into a power source and the other into your light strips.

Next: 

1. Open the App Store/Play Store
2. Download the LED Magic Blue app
3. Turn your LED lights on.
4. Turn your phone’s Bluetooth on
5. Open the app
6. Detect the LED lights
7. Pair the app with them

This method is also very useful for controlling your lights independently of the TV.

An advantage over the Wi-Fi adapter is that Bluetooth is less volatile. 

Note: Just like the Wi-Fi adapter, Bluetooth doesn't block IR frequency. 

Perhaps your LEDs will still pick up the IR signal, but you can activate them however you want!

How Do I Stop LED Lights From Interfering With My Tv?

Perhaps your LED lights commands are causing some interference with your TV. A common cause is again the IR controller.

If that is the case, apply the same solutions we recommended in Methods #3, #4, and #5. 

If the issue persists, then the following shall help:

• Use shielded cables
• Install EMI filters or chokes at the transformer’s input and output. 
• Aerials should be placed as far away from sources of interference as practicable and use coaxial cables to link them to receiving equipment.
