How To Connect DirecTV Remote To Roku TV?
Preparation Steps
How to connect Roku TV to the DirecTV remote? Before starting, ensure that the remote control is functional.
Test this by pressing any button on the remote and checking for a response from the receiver.
If the remote’s LED does not flash, replace its batteries with fresh ones.
There are other things you must ensure before trying to pair both systems:
Step #1: Connect Roku To The Internet
You must ensure your Roku TV is connected to the internet and the connection is good enough.
That might be necessary in some situations where the system will verify the DirecTV programming code.
Do the following:
- Navigate to the Roku network settings.
- Go to “About.”
- Check “Signal strength” and “Internet download speed.”
The signal strength must be listed as good or excellent. Also, an acceptable internet download speed is at least 20MB/s.
Note: If your Roku TV is not connected to the internet, you must connect it now. Select a 5GHz Wi-Fi and enter the credentials to access it.
Step #2: Update The Roku Firmware
You might face glitches in the pairing process if your Roku TV doesn’t have the latest firmware.
Here is how you can update its firmware before trying to pair the DirecTV remote:
- Access TV settings.
- Go to the “System” menu.
- Choose “System Update.”
- Select “Check Now.”
Download the update if the TV prompts its availability.
Step #3: Connect The DirecTV Receiver
Your DirecTV system needs to be connected to the Roku TV you want to control.
That is how you will be able to control the DirecTV remote in the first steps.
- Connect the DirecTV receiver to the power.
- Connect its HDMI or coaxial cable to the TV’s port.
- Turn both devices on.
- Ensure your TV recognizes the DirecTV receiver.
Step #4: Update The DirecTV Receiver
What was said about the Roku firmware is also valid for the DirecTV receiver.
An outdated receiver might cause issues when you try to pair both systems.
So here is what you need to do:
- Power on your DirecTV receiver.
- Press the “Menu” button on your DirecTV remote.
- Navigate to “Settings.”
- Select “System” or “System Information.”
- Choose “Software Update.”
- Select “Check for Updates” or “Software Update Check.”
- Download it if a recent version of the firmware is available.

After that, a few on-screen instructions will show up, but those are very brief and easy to follow.
Your remote should be paired in a few seconds.
Method #2: Using The Genie Remote Control
Some DirecTV users might have the DirecTV Genie remote.
That is different from the Universal remote and depends on more devices.
The device you have (whether HD DVR, Genie Mini, or Wireless Mini) will also take part in the pairing process.
Check below the two ways:
Automatic Pairing
DirecTV Genie remote allows you to pair very quickly through automatic pairing.
Here are the steps:
- Point your Genie remote towards the HD DVR, Genie Mini, or Wireless Mini.
- Simultaneously press Enter and Mute.
- A green light must blink twice.

- Enter the Roku system.
- Access the Menu.
- Go to Settings & Help>Settings>Remote Control>Program Remote.
- Ensure the Roku device or Roku TV recognizes your remote.
- Follow the on-screen prompts.
Manual Pairing
For Genie remote users, if automatic pairing does not work, try the manual pairing method.
Follow the steps carefully and ensure that you are using the correct manufacturer code for your Roku TV.
- Point the remote at the HD DVR, Genie Mini, or Wireless Genie Mini.
- Simultaneously press Select and Mute.
- Wait for a double green light flash.
- Input the code “961.”

- Hit Enter.
- An on-screen indication should show up.
- Enter the Roku system.
- Go to Settings & Help>Settings>Remote Control>Program Remote.
- Ensure the Roku system recognizes your DirecTV Genie control.

Method #3: Pair Using The Roku Code
There is a different method that uses your Roku TV’s manufacturer code on the Genie DVR’s system.
That way, your TV will be linked to the DVR system and answer to the remote control.
Here are the steps you must follow:
- Point the remote to the Genie DVR.
- Simultaneously press Enter and Mute.
- Wait for a double green light flash.
- Ensure ‘Applying IR/RF Setup.’ shows up.
- Switch to the Roku system.
- Hold the Select and Mute buttons.
- Wait for another double green light flash.
- Enter the Manufacturer code for your Roku TV.
The remote is now paired and ready to control Roku.
Tip: If the Roku TV doesn't respond post-pairing, power cycle both devices. Unplug, wait a few minutes, and reconnect to fix minor glitches.
Method #4: Using The Remote’s Model Number
Similar to method #3, the method we are about to teach you also uses a serial number.
However, this time, we will use DirecTV’s remote serial number.
You will also need to access DirecTV’s site to learn the code you must use.
- Identify your Directv remote model number (usually located in the upper left corner).
- Access Directv’s remote control site.
- Choose your remote’s model number from the list.
- Enter “Roku” as the Brand name and search.
- Locate the code you need for the pairing.
Next, turn on the TV and the DirecTV device:
- Simultaneously hold the Select and Mute buttons.
- Wait for a double-green light flash.
- Input the code for Roku TV.
Note: If the TV doesn't recognize the pairing code, re-enter it and follow steps for your remote model. For ongoing issues, consult the manual.
