GE Dishwasher Leak Detected? – What Are The Causes?

One of the worst things that can happen to any electronic that uses water is leaking. When your GE Dishwasher signals that there is a leak detected, you need to investigate and fix it. 

Different causes will result in the GE Cafe dishwasher leak being detected. The most common are:

1. Water inlet valve – If the water inlet valve is defective and unable to close, too much water will fill the dishwasher, leading to leakage.

2. Water arm assembly – When this part of the dishwasher is defective, water will leak into the wrong parts of the device.

3. Door gasket/seal – A deteriorated door gasket will let water leak out since it can’t close the door correctly.

4. Door hinges – Perhaps the problem is with the hinges instead of the gasket. The hinges might prevent the door from closing all the way.

Any problems listed above will require you to work on replacing the defective part.

In this section, we will help you determine where the problem is. Then, we will teach you how to replace each part effectively.

Solution #1: Check Door Hinges And Replace If Needed

Here is one of the less common causes of a leaky GE Dishwasher. However, it is the easiest to solve. Because of that, it is a problem you should check first. 

The screws that hold your dishwasher’s door on might get loose or even fall out after years of use.

Also, if the door doesn’t close tightly, water will leak from the tub and onto the floor near your appliance. 

Look at the hinges to see whether a loose or missing screw might cause the leaky dishwasher.

When any screw is loose, get a screwdriver and secure it. On the other hand, if a screw is missing, you should check if you have any fitting screw sparing around your house.

If you don’t, go to the nearest store and buy someone to replace and others for eventual needs.

How To Replace The Door Hinge

In the worst case, you notice the hinge is defective or broken. In that case, you need to replace it.

As with any appliance, you must turn the power off before repairing the dishwasher. 

Pull the dishwasher out from the cabinet so you can fix the door hinge and remove the bottom panel’s screws using a quarter-inch socket or nut driver.

To verify whether the power and water supply lines have enough slack to move the dishwasher, remove the panel and insulation. If not, turn off the water.

Before removing the door to replace the hinge, you will need to deal with other parts:

1. Using a 5/16-inch socket or nut driver, remove the junction box cover. 
2. Remove shield.
3. Locate the cables, then twist off the wire nuts to cut the electricity.
4. Unscrew the junction box’s strain relief nut.
5. Run the drain hose through the cabinet.
6. Remove the dishwasher’s mounting brackets.

Now you are ready to take the door out:

1. Disconnect the door’s cables.
2. Disconnect the door wires from the retainer.
3. After opening the door, remove it from its hinges.

Finally, on to the hinge:

1. Remove the bottom screw holding the hinge with a quarter-inch hex socket or nut driver. 
2. Slide out the hinge.
3. Install the replacement door hinge.
4. Replace the lock.
5. Reinstall the door and hinge pins.
6. Close the door after reconnecting the door wiring and securing the wires.
7. Hook wires to door hinges.

After that, just reinstall all the parts you had to remove. Once everything is in place, turn the dishwasher on to check that you installed the new door hinge correctly.

Tip: If you have kids in your house, don't let them open and close the dishwasher's door all the time, as that damages the hinges.

Solution #2: Replace The Door Gasket

Before assuming that the gasket is defective, check if it is dirty.

The gasket that seals your dishwasher becomes filthy as it withstands washing too many rounds of dishes. 

Inspect the gasket and clean it with warm water and soap before you assume the more severe problem is to blame for the leak in your dishwasher.

Checking For Damages

A clear sign of a defective gasket is that the door won’t shut properly even though the hinges are fine.

However, you must inspect it closely if the gasket has just begun to give away.

Look for any signs of cuts or tears in the gasket. The water might be leaking through any small hole in the gasket.

Replacing The Door Gasket

Open the dishwasher door and, starting at one end, pull the old gasket free of the channel.

You’re now ready to install the new door gasket. 

1. Leave some of the new gaskets extended past the bottom of the channel 
2. Press approximately six inches of the new gasket into the channel 
3. Make sure its lip faces outward
4. Repeat for the opposite side with both ends secured 
5. Stretch the gasket as you position it in the remainder of the channel

The gasket is already installed, so ensure the door is closing properly. If it is, next, turn the dishwasher on to check if the issue has been solved.

Note: You might find the gasket also described as the seal. Sometimes they are different parts, but here they are the same.

Solution #3: Check Spray Arms

To check if the leak detected GE dishwasher is with the spray arms, start by taking out the bottom dish rack.

Next:

1. Turn the lowest spray arm of the dishwasher with your hand. 
2. Note whether the arm can move freely. 
3. Raise one end of the spray arm carefully. 
4. Take a close look at the seams where the spray arms attach. 

If they are broken or cracked, the water pressure may not be high enough to properly wash the dishes. 

Furthermore, your dishwasher may leak if water is gushing out of the spray arm’s seams.

The spray tower should be raised as high as possible before being released. Such freedom of movement is necessary. 

If you take off the top dish rack, you can reach the spray arm in the ceiling. Test the top spray arm the same way you tested the lower one.

The top spray arm may not sway as much as the lower one, so keep that in mind.

Note: If you notice any spray arms are no longer working correctly, it is time to replace them!

Replacing The Spray Arms

Once you have your hands in a new spray arm and the dishwasher opened up as instructed above, you must replace the part.

First, if you removed washers, reinstall them onto the spray arm in the reverse order you removed them. 

To replace the spray arm: 

1. Take out the old one
2. Throw it away
3. Position the new one
4. Secure it
5. Close the dishwasher and test

Tip: The spray arms of a dishwasher may be detached for cleaning.  

Soaking the spray arm in warm, soapy water is an effective way to clean it. Use a strong stream of water to make sure it’s clean.

Solution #4: Replace The Inlet Valve

Are you still getting the GE Profile dishwasher leak detected? Then the most likely problem is with the inlet valve.

Since it is responsible for the water flowing into the device, its malfunctioning will cause an overflow and then leakage. 

Testing The Inlet Valve

The inlet valve is in the bottom right or left corner, hidden beneath the kickplate panel.

The panel might contain two screws on either the top or bottom. The kickplate must be disassembled by first loosening the two screws. 

The hoses feeding to the water inlet valve will indicate its location. Once you locate the inlet valve, it is time to test it. 

1. Grab the connections and pull to free the wires
2. Use a multimeter to check for continuity
3. Use ohms x 1 option

An infinite reading means a broken valve. You must test its second set of terminals too. You should do just as you did with the inlet valve.

Infinite reading here means a problem too. You must replace the valve if any tests show infinite readings.

Replacing the Inlet Valve

Above we already told you how to open the dishwasher and find the inlet valve.

Once you have it open up and diagnose that the problem is with that part, do the following.

Usually, at least two screws secure the valve to the dishwasher. With a new inlet valve and a Phillips screwdriver in your hands, do the following:

1. Remove all screws that keep the valve in place
2. Detach the valve
3. Carefully put the new inlet valve in place
4. Use the screws to lock the new valve in place
5. Reconnect all tubes and cables
6. Replace the panel below the kickplate

Once everything is in place again, turn the dishwasher on to test it.

Tip: Using a set of pliers when moving wires is recommended.
