DirecTV Stream Fast Forward Not Working? Numerous reasons can cause that, and some are easy to troubleshoot.
Common causes that make fast forward not work include software incompatibility/being outdated, jammed network, or device malfunctioning.
When it comes to software, that is very easy to fix.
However, suppose you don’t know how. In that case, we will teach you all about it in the guide below.
Why Is The DirecTV Stream Fast Forward Not Working?
Many users are boggled by the fast forward on the DirecTV stream not working.
However, before solving the issue, it is necessary to understand what is causing it.
Only after determining the cause can you take action to eliminate the problem.
Below are listed the most common causes of this situation. Check:
Defective Remote Control
The remote control should not stop working so easily, but that can happen. When it happens, the fast forward and other functions might stop working.
Malfunctioning Receivers
The receivers are responsible for processing the commands from the remote control. Most of your commands won’t be recognized if there is any issue with them.
You Don’t Have the Ability to Off
Are you watching a live channel and trying to fast-forward ads? In that case, there is no issue. You simply can’t FF ads!
System Issue
If you are not using a DirecTV box, some functions may not work properly. Users with Roku, FireTV, and AppleTV Box have issues with FF.
Storage Capacity at its Limit
If you have the DirecTV Stream installed on a different device, it might be that the device is already full of apps and content.
Internet Connection
DirecTV Stream depends on a steady internet connection. That being said, a faulty Wi-Fi/ethernet will mess with your experience.
DirecTV Stream Fast Forward Not Working – Fix Guide
For each problem you are facing, you can try at least one solution.
If you are unsure which problem applies to your household, you can try different solutions and see which works.
At the end of this guide, your DirecTV Stream fast forward shall be working just fine.
Solution #1: Check Your Internet Connection
As you already know, DirecTV Stream relies heavily on your internet connection.
Perhaps you think that you have superb Wi-Fi that never fails. Well, no connection is infallible!
A good way to determine if your Wi-Fi is at fault is by paying attention to how the whole system works.
For example, is anything taking too long to load on DirecTV? If the answer is positive, resetting your Wi-Fi is the logical next step.
Even if the answer is negative, resetting your Wi-Fi is still advised. After all, it is a simple step that can do wonders.
- Locate your router’s power button
- Press it until it is off.
- Wait for a few moments
- Turn the power back on.
Even if you use a wired connection for your DirecTV device or any other TV box, the router controls it. Thus, resetting it will take effect.
Tip: If you notice the issue is, in fact, with your internet but resetting it doesn't do the trick, get in touch with your ISP.
Solution #2: Check The Storage Capacity
DirecTV Stream is not limited to the device that comes with your signature. Many users install the DirecTV Stream app on Roku, Apple TV, etc.
Each of such devices has a certain storage capacity. And, as with any smart device, it will get clunky when too many files and apps are on it.
In that case, you must check the storage capacity of your device. You might try to uninstall any app you feel you are not using anymore (that happens all the time).
If you have a device that allows you to store more than just apps, try to delete some unused files.
Alert: Remember that you must not fill your whole storage limit. Any device needs room to breathe and process commands.
Solution #3: Update Your DirecTV Stream Device
A common cause of malfunctioning settings is the software being outdated. For example, Windows users always notice their computers become slower when a scheduled update occurs.
That might happen with other systems too.
If you suspect that is the case with your DirecTV Stream Device, you can check for updates:
- Press Home on the DirecTV remote control
- Select the gear icon (settings)
- Click System and General
- Choose Check For Updates
If any update is available, you can download it. After the update is installed, check if the fast-forward issue is gone.
Note: If you are using another device to access the DirecTV Stream, checking for app updates is useful too.
Solution #4: Manage Your App On Android/iOS
DirecTV Stream is available on any iOS or Android device. When issues happen on those, the easiest solution is to close the app and open it again.
If that does not work, the next step is uninstalling or updating the app.
On Android
On Android, you must head to the PlayStore and find the DirecTV Stream app.
Are there any updates available? If there is, simply download them.
If there are not, do the following:
- Navigate to the app icon on your phone
- Hold it
- Uninstall
- Head to the PlayStore again
- Reinstall the app
On iOS
On your iOS device, you must:
- Open the App Store
- Click your profile icon
- Scroll until you find pending updates
- Check if there are any available for DirecTV Stream
- If there are, install the updates
If no updates are available, then do the following:
- Locate the app on your phone
- Hold it
- Select remove app
Tip: Sometimes, it is not the app malfunctioning but your phone! You can try resetting your phone to see if DirecTV's fast-forward functions again.
Solution #5: Manage Your Roku Box
Many people access DirecTV Stream using other smart TV devices such as Roku, Fire TV, or Apple TV Box.
In all those cases, some functions may stop working for different reasons. One of those functions is the fast forward.
The first step to try and get fast forward back to work on Roku is checking for app updates:
- Press Home on the remote
- Locate the DirecTV Stream app
- Press * (star)
- Scroll down and click on check for updates
- If updates are available, they will be installed
If no updates show up, you must reinstall the app:
- Locate the DirecTV Stream app
- Press the * (star) button
- Select “remove channel/app.”
- Enter the Channel Store
- Find the DirecTV Stream app
- Download it
Update Your Roku System
If none of the above works, the last thing to do is update your Roku device’s system.
Here is how you can proceed:
- Press Home on the remote
- Find Settings and then the system
- Choose System Update
- Select Check Now
- If there is any update available, install it
When the device updates, it will restart automatically.
Tip: You can also unplug and plug back your Roku box to see if it makes any difference.
Solution #6: Manage Your Fire TV Stick
Usually, no app on your Fire TV Stick will open if there is an update to be installed. Instead, it will install the update and open the app after that.
Thus, there are two things you can try on Fire TV: reinstall DirecTV Stream and update the Fire TV software.
To reinstall DirecTV Stream, do the following:
- Go to Settings
- Select Applications
- Select Manage Installed Applications
- Select DirecTV Stream, and then Uninstall
- Select the Find button on your Fire TV home screen
- Select Search
- Type “DirecTV Stream“
- Download it
If that did not work, perhaps the Fire TV software is outdated. Let’s check for updates:
- Click the Gear icon on the home menu
- Scroll down and choose My Fire TV
- Click About and Check for updates
- If any update is available, download it.
Note: Older Fire Sticks don't update all the time automatically. The method above is useful if you have one of those.
Solution #7: Manage Your Apple Box
You must check for updates if you have DirecTV Stream installed in your Apple Box and any function has stopped working.
Here is how:
- Open the App Store
- Find DirecTV Stream
- Choose Update if available
If updating is not available, uninstall the app and install it again. You can do that on the same page of the App Store.
When none of that works, it is time to look for updates on your Apple Box:
- Open the Settings app on your Apple TV.
- Select System.
- Go to Software Updates
- Select Update Software
- Select Download and Install if an update is available
Note: We covered the most popular streaming devices. If you have another model, the thought process is the same: try to update the app or uninstall it. If nothing changes, look for updates in your device's system.
What We Learned
DirecTV Stream Fast Forward Not Working? When that happens, you must try to update your software.

Sometimes, the fault is on DirecTV Stream’s end or your smart TV device manufacturer.
Getting in touch with them can help you learn the trouble and when they will release a patch.
