A Toshiba Fire TV may not be turning due to issues with the power or a malfunction in the electrical outlet.

It’s also likely that the problem comes from third-party equipment, devices, or a potential malfunction in the remote or the TV’s hardware components.

Let’s dig deeper!

6 Reasons Why Toshiba Fire TV Will Not Turn On?

reasons why toshiba fire tv will not turn on
  1. A defective power outlet, cable, or adapter.
  2. A fault in the TV setup’s cable connections.
  3. An issue with the Toshiba Fire TV remote.
  4. Problems with the remote’s IR line of sight.
  5. Unclean remote IR “eye” or TV IR receiver.
  6. A possible malfunction in the TV hardware.

Try This First!

Double-check if the Toshiba remote is working before attempting to turn on the Toshiba Fire TV.

It is possible that the batteries of the remote are starting to wear out and due to insufficient power supply, the remote is having functionality problems.

Reminder: Have you tried turning on the Toshiba Fire TV with the physical power button?

Tip: In case any of the below’s solutions don’t help, simply jump to the next one!

1. Press the TV Power Button!

press the tv power button

The Toshiba Fire TV comes with an installed panel power button, that allows the user to freely control the power state of the TV, without a remote.

The power button of the Toshiba Fire TV is located on the bottom panel of the device, directly beneath the left part of the TV display screen.

  • Press and hold the power button for about 3 seconds to turn on the TV!

In case the TV does not start upon pressing the physical power button, hold the button for 30 seconds straight, to perform a hard reset.

Essentially, if your TV receivers power, by holding the button you will power cycle the electricity, which sometimes solves power-related TV issues.

If pressing the Toshiba TV power button doesn’t do anything, continue reading!

2. Double-Check the Input Source

double-check the input source

It is possible that the Toshiba Fire TV is actually running, but showing a black screen due to a selected empty input source.

This may sometimes replicate a non-working TV screen, which makes users think that the Toshiba Fire TV is not turning on, while the problem is elsewhere.

Here’s how to switch the input source on the Toshiba Fire TV:

  1. Press and hold the Home button on the Toshiba TV remote.
  2. If the home menu opens, select the “Inputs” tab on the left.
  3. Highlight the “Watch TV” or the “Cable TV” source and exit.

Selecting the Correct Input Source?

In case the TV display suddenly showed menus and pictures, it’s clear that the TV is working.

Well, to prevent selecting incorrect input sources again, simply peek behind the TV to identify where your source devices are connected.

Tip: Feel free to test with multiple TV sources to identify when the screen will show a picture!

3. Unplug the TV from the Power Supply

unplug the tv from the power supply

If the problem is with the power equipment, unplugging the TV from the power supply should help and the Toshiba Fire TV should turn on.

Also called a “power cycle”, this method helps with any power-related issues by discharging the TV and resetting all operational services.

Follow these steps to properly unplug the Toshiba Fire TV from power:

  1. Hold the “Powerbutton on the remote for 10 seconds.
  2. Unplug the power adapter of the TV from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait for 60 seconds while the TV is unplugged from power.
  4. Press all buttons on the remote control, twice while aiming.
  5. Reconnect the power adapter directly to the wall outlet.
  6. Turn on the Toshiba Fire TV using the TV front power button.
Reminder: Have you tested whether the power outlet is functional?

4. Unplug ALL External Devices!

unplug all external devices

If the Toshiba Fire TV is completely unresponsive and shows no indication of any workability, then there could be a hardware conflict with an external device.

All third-party devices that are connected to the Toshiba Fire TV use different technology, often leading to TV power issues.

Unplug the following devices on the setup of the Toshiba Fire TV:

  • All HDMI source devices are connected to the Toshiba TV.
  • All Coax, RCA, components, plus other video cables.
  • Any installed power strips/dividers or outlet connectors.
  • Smart outlets are connected to the power source of the TV.
  • Any 3.5mm jack headphones, antennas, and others…

By the end, you should only have your Toshiba Fire TV connected to the power and to nothing else, which is a naked setup. Only then, test if the TV is turning on, and if yes, we know why…

This setting allows the remote control of an HDMI-connected device to turn on and off the TV, which sometimes impacts the functionality of the original remote.

Considering that the TV is not turning on, the quickest way to stop this feature (not from the menu) is by unplugging everything!

5. Use a Different Electrical Outlet

use a different electrical outlet

It is possible that the problem is with the power outlet that supplies your Toshiba Fire TV with an electrical current.

To determine if the problem is with the outlet or not, the fastest way would be to connect the TV to an alternative (standalone) outlet, without anything in-between.

  • Connect the Toshiba Fire TV on a different fuse from your A/C line!

Once you’ve connected the TV to an alternative power outlet, test starting the device up both by pressing the remote’s power button and the in-built one.

Note: In case of a recent power outage in your area, it’s likely that the power is not stable (fluctuating), which impacts electrical units.

6. Replace the TV’s Power Adapter

replace the tv’s power adapter

If the power adapter goes faulty, your Toshiba Fire TV will remain turned off until the cable is either replaced or repaired.

Since replacement power adapters compatible with the Toshiba Fire TV come at an approachable price, this is the best course of action from here on…

Proper Replacement Adapter?

You must get a male-to-female, Type-A plug format adapter compatible with all Toshiba TVs and supplying the highest amount of voltage.

Then you only need to remove the current power adapter from the TV setup and connect your new adapter to a proven-to-work power outlet.

Note: Do not use a second-hand adapter with the Toshiba Fire TV!

7. Start a Firmware Update (From Menu)

start a firmware update (from menu)

Sometimes the TV keeps failing to perform the upgrade and shuts down or the screen goes black out of a sudden.

So, if you’re able to interact with the Toshiba TV menu, even if only for a limited amount of time, one of the things to attempt is a manual firmware upgrade

Note: In case the TV is not turning on at all, jump to the next solution!
  1. Go to Settings of your Toshiba Fire TV.
  2. Press on “My Fire TV” and navigate to “About”.
  3. Press on “Check for System Updates” and wait.
  4. Once the checker is done, press “Update”.

Well, if you somehow were able to initiate a manual update and the TV updates, it’s likely that the issue you’re experiencing would be gone.

If not, simply proceed with the next solution!

8. Perform a Factory Reset (Old TVs)

perform a factory reset (old tvs)

Newer Toshiba TVs don’t have a physical reset button, but some older models do have such a reset button, which might save the day.

To identify whether your Toshiba Fire TV can be reset even when not working, try to locate a small reset button pinhole on the back display panel.

  • To perform a factory reset, find a thin and sharp object such as a needle to reach within the pinhole and press the reset button.

Even if you don’t see anything on the TV screen, hold the button for about 20 seconds, and then test whether the TV will turn on.

If the TV remains unresponsive seek help at Toshiba Support.

Quick Recap:

Hence, whenever Toshiba Fire TV not turning on, test turning on the TV via the power button on the front and not on the remote.

In case that doesn’t help, connect the TV to another (standalone) power outlet and attempt to perform a reset if the TV model allows it.
