Your Mobile is Connected to a VPN
The next most common reason is that your mobile device is using a VPN or a Virtual Private Network.
Since VPNs usually hide your IP by routing all of your traffic, the Roku TV might not be able to see it.
So, disable the VPN on your mobile device or your computer.
Your Roku TV is Using a Public IP Address
This problem is most often solved by your internet service provider (ISP) or the network manager.
Your Roku TV needs to have a private IP address and usually happens when you don’t have a router in your network.

Step 1: Check Network Access
The first thing you want to do is to make sure that your Roku TV’s Network Access setting is set to be at the Default or Permissive setting.
What this means is that it’ll allow the mobile application to have access to the TV, and vice versa.
NOTE: Most users just choose the Default setting because it’s the basic setting. Choosing the Permissive one is more advanced and more technical.
Step 2: Check Roku TV’s Wireless Network Connection
What you want to do next is to check if the Roku TV is connected to the correct WiFi network.
If you have multiple modems/routers within your home, you need to make sure that both devices are on the same network.
On your Roku TV, go to Settings > Network. Your television will check for all available wireless connections.
Then, connect it to your home WiFi or the exact router/modem you want to use.
If the television has previously been connected to a network, it’ll automatically give you a list of all available wireless networks that are within range.
If not, you’d have to press on Setup a New Wireless Connection.
Choose the network you want to connect to and input the password for it. Double-check if it’s correct so you can avoid going back and forth.
You will know that the connection was successful when it gives you the three (3) checks. Moreover, you’ll see Status: Connected when it redirects you back to the settings page.
Step 3: Check Mobile Phone if Connected to the Same Network
Now that you were able to connect your television to the network, it’s time to check if your phone or your mobile device is connected.
For Android devices, go to Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi. You will immediately see which network you are connected to, the name will be highlighted in blue.
For iPhones, go to Settings > Wi-Fi. Akin to Android devices, you should immediately see which network you are connected to.
If this is not the network where your television is connected, click on Wi-Fi and choose from the list of the networks within range.
If you don’t see the network, turn airplane mode on for about 15 seconds. While turned off, try to get nearer to the modem or the router, then turn it back on.
Now that you see it, click on it and input the password for the network.
You will see that it’s duly connected when you see the WiFi symbol on the top right part of your phone (Androids) and top left (iPhones).
Step 4: Force Restart Roku TV
The next thing you want to do is to force restart your Roku TV.
To do this,
- Press on the [HOME] button five (5) times
- Then the [^] button once
- [<<<] twice
- And [>>>] twice
When you do this, your screen will freeze for a moment, about 30 seconds, then it will turn off.
When it turns off, don’t do anything, let the television power up by itself.
Step 5: Power Cycle Phone
While that’s happening, you can simultaneously do the next step, which is to power cycle your phone, too.
Power cycling is just the act of powering your mobile device off and turning it back on again.
Step 6: Manually Connect App to Roku TV
Now, you would want to manually connect to your Roku TV. You can do this by clicking the three (3) dots with a circle and clicking on Connect Manually.
