Is it possible to change Kindle account without losing books? It’s complicated.
Here in this guide, we will guide you through the process of changing accounts and keep reading the books you’ve bought.
If you want to change accounts and still read your books, you have to share books across accounts or download your books in a digital format (non-official method).
Check below how to keep your Kindle books even when you decide to use another account!
Change Kindle Account Without Losing Books – Is It Possible?
Will I lose all my books if I deregister my Kindle? The answer depends on what you are planning to do precisely.
According to Amazon, you cannot migrate Kindle content from one account to another. Unfortunately, the service doesn’t provide such a possibility.
However, simply unregistering your Kindle won’t make you lose books.
The books will stay on your account. The issue is when you wish to use a different account.
Then, official methods won’t cut it – aside from one, which allows the sharing of books across accounts.
Let’s see below.
Method #1: Share The Content Across Accounts
How to change your Kindle account without losing books? One of the simplest methods is to share your content from one account to another.
You can do that with any account as long as you have the email address.
Once you do that, the content shared will be available on the other account.
Let’s see how to do it.
- Log in to your Amazon account;
- Go to “My Account” > “Manage My Kindle” > “My Kindle Library.”
- Click “Actions” next to the eBook;
- Select “Loan this title;”
- Fill in the recipient Kindle’s details;
- Click “Send Now;”
- Log into the recipient account;
- Click “Get my loaned books now” to receive the eBook.
Now you will be able to read the book in your alternative account.
The only issue is that some books might have restrictions such as a time limit for reading them.
Check that info before you decide to stop using the original account for good.
Method #2: Use The Kindle Family Library
A different and very useful method to transfer books across Kindle accounts is the Kindle Family Library.
You can add other Kindle users as family members, and thus sharing books becomes very easy.
If you wish to change accounts, you can simply add your new account as a family member.
- Visit Amazon’s official website;
- Navigate to Your Account > Manage your content and devices > Settings > Household and Family Library;
- Click “Invite an Adult“;
- Enter your second account’s login information;
- Agree to authorize payment methods, Family Library, and child profiles;
- Create a Household;
- Select and share desired content like “Apps,” “Books,” or “Audiobooks.”
The eBooks selected will be transferred to the other account.
Probably this is the method you have been looking for that is easiest.
Method #3: Transfer Your Account’s Region
Perhaps you wish to change accounts because you have moved between countries and you want to access Amazon’s services within the new country.
Luckily, you don’t need to change your Amazon/Kindle account just because of that.
Instead, you can transfer your account’s region.
- Go to Amazon’s official website;
- Log in to your Amazon account;
- Hover over the “Account & Lists” dropdown menu;
- Select “Your Content and Devices;”
- In the left sidebar, choose “Preferences;”
- Under “Country/Region Settings,” click “Change;”
- Select your new region;
- Update your payment information if necessary.
- Confirm the change.
After doing that, all the services Amazon provides for the country where you live now will be available to you.
That includes deals/sales that Kindle has for the country.
Method #4: Convert Your Kindle Books To Another Format
Perhaps you don’t want to use your old Amazon account for some reason.
In that case, simply sharing across accounts might not be the method you want to use.
Then, you probably are looking to download your Kindle books, as that is the only other available method.
Step #1: Download and Install Calibre
First, you need a software called Calibre that will help throughout most of the process.
You will install it on your computer.
- Visit Calibre’s download page;
- Choose the version for your operating system (Mac or Windows);
- Install it.
Step #2: Download and Install the DeDRM Plugin
Since the Kindle books in your library have DRM protection, you need the DeDRM plugin.
- Go to GitHub;
- Look for “DeDRM plugin”;
- Locate the file download page for the project and download it;
- Extract the zip file to a location of your choice;
- Launch Calibre and go to “Preferences” > “Plugins;”
- Click “Load plugin from file” and select the “DeDRM_plugin” file.
Step #3: Find Your Kindle’s Serial Number
Next, getting the books from your Kindle will require cracking their DRM.
In turn, cracking the DRM will require you to know your Kindle’s serial number:
- Go to your Kindle device;
- Go to “Settings” by tapping the three dots;
- Select “Device Options” > “Device Info.”
- Note down your Kindle’s serial number without spaces.
Step #4: Configure the DeDRM Plugin
Now you will use the serial number info on the Calibre software:
- Go to the plugin window;
- Locate “File Type” and locate the entry for DeDRM;
- Select it and click “Customize plugin.”
- Choose “eInk Kindle ebooks” and add your Kindle’s serial number;
- Click “OK” to confirm.
Step #5: Add the KFX Input Plugin
We are almost there, but a new plugin is still necessary (this one you can download within Calibre):
- Click “Get new plugins” within Calibre;
- Search for “KFX Input” and install it;
- Check if your books show up in Calibre now;
- Download/import them;
Calibre will automatically remove the ebook DRM during import.
That means your books are ready to be sent to any device with any account logged.
Note: This is not piracy as you have acquired the books. You are just getting full access to their files, which is not an official service.
Step #6: Switch Accounts And Get Your Books Back
Once your books are on Calibre and their DRM protection has been removed, you can transfer them to any Kindle logged into any account.
- Plug your Kindle into the computer via USB;
- Open the Calibre software;
- Select the books you want within the Calibre library;
- Click on “Send to Kindle”.
Just remember to keep your books stored somewhere: on the PC, cloud, or Kindle device.
If you don’t want to use your old account anymore, you can’t get them back through the Amazon service.
Quick Recap
You can change the Kindle account without losing books as long as you keep the old account up to share the books with the new one.
If you don’t do that, then all the books will be erased from your old account and you lose access to them.
If you want permanent access to your books from an old account, you must download them using Calibre
