  • Internal SimpliSafe system error.
  • Power inconsistency.

This is a brief glimpse of the causes for SimpliSafe blinking in a yellow light.

1. Check Internet Connection

The first step to resolving the issue of a SimpliSafe blinking light is to ensure your internet is not the cause of a failed or indefinitely pending software update.

We provided a couple of solutions, so ensure you complete them in the given order for optimal results.

Here are some basic steps for ensuring a proper internet connection:

  • Ensure other devices can connect to your Wi-Fi, such as mobile phones.
  • Check if your WiFi network is not overloaded by other high bandwidth-consuming activities such as uploading or downloading large files.
  • Verify with another device that your WiFi signal strength is sufficiently strong when next to your SimpliSafe camera device – anything less than three filled bars can cause update issues.
  • Test your internet connection for stability and speed via any online benchmarking tool.
  • Contact your internet service provider if you notice poor connectivity of your SimpliSafe camera or other devices paired to your WiFi network.

After you have gone through the above steps, check to see if your SimpliSafe is working correctly.

Note: It is essential to confirm that the Wi-Fi password entered on the SimpliSafe camera is correct.

2. Check Your Power Supply

checking your power supply

Depending on your SimpliSafe camera model, you might have a removable battery power source.

If your battery is insufficiently charged, this can prevent updates from properly installing.

Your app should notify you of low battery levels; however, the message may not appear if there is a software issue.

Here are the best ways to ensure your SimpliSafe power supply is sufficient:

  1. To check if your power supply is good, remove the SimpliSafe camera from its mount.
  2. Remove the back side panel to expose the battery compartment.
  3. Carefully remove the battery and put it to charge.
  4. Afterward, reinstall the battery and see if the yellow light goes away.
Note: Inspect your SimpliSafe camera for external damage, which could cause a false yellow light alert. Carefully examine the lens and body for signs of wear.

3. Reset the Camera and Reconnect to WiFi

One of the solutions to why my Simplisafe camera blinking yellow is often to perform a camera reset sequence and then manually reconnect it to the WiFi network.

This could clear up any temporary errors and lead to a successful update.

Here is how to reset your SimpliSafe Camera:

  1. Turn off the SimpliSafe camera.
  2. Wait for about 30 seconds until the static electric build-up clears.
  3. Turn the SimpliSafe camera back on.
  4. Check if the yellow light blinking stops.

After these steps, reconnect the camera manually to WiFi via these steps:

  1. Open the SimpliSafe app.
  2. Navigate to camera settings.
  3. Disconnect and reconnect the camera to Wi-Fi.
  4. Confirm if the camera connects without blinking.
Note: After performing these steps, if your camera still has a yellow light, wait for 10-15 minutes to ensure your update has enough time to install and reconfigure your camera.

4. Update the Firmware

The way SimpliSafe cameras work is their firmware is updated only if the base station or app is running the latest version.

Here are some general steps for updating your SimpliSafe firmware:

  1. Visit the SimpliSafe app or website.
  2. Check for information on the latest available firmware updates for your camera model.
  3. Open your SimpliSafe app and check if there is a notification for a pending update
  4. If you use a Keypad, look for signs of a gray gear symbol indicating a pending update instead.
  5. Install any updates to your SimpliSafe app, restart your camera, and see if it updates appropriately now.
Note: Check on the official SimpliSafe website or app for any notifications describing temporary service inaccessibility.

SimpliSafe cameras usually use the 2.4GHz network band to transfer information. If your router is set exclusively to the 5GHz frequency, this can cause issues.

Furthermore, the correct security protocol is required for optimal camera operation.

To check your router settings, you need to perform these steps:

  1. Open your router configuration panel by logging in to its Admin panel, usually done by typing your IP address in a web browser and pressing enter.
  2. Enter your username and password, typically listed on the backside of your router.
  3. Navigate to your bandwidth frequency settings
  4. Ensure your WiFi broadcasts on a 2.4GHz band or uses a dual-channel mode.
  5. If your WiFi router is set to 5GHz only, set it to 2.4GHz.
  6. Apply the changes, navigate to your settings, and search for the words “Security Protocol.”
  7. Verify that the security protocol matches the recommended settings of WPA2-PSK with AES encryption.

Depending on your internet service provider (ISP), these settings might be accessed differently.

If in doubt, reach out to your ISP. After configuring these settings, restart your camera and check if any lights are blinking.

Note: If your WiFi signal is too weak, consider installing a repeater and placing it somewhere closer to your SimpliSafe camera.

6. Hard Reset Your SimpliSafe Device

A factory reset can remove internal software errors and is usually reserved as a last resort during device troubleshooting.

Factory resets restore your device to how it was configured when you first installed it.

The steps below might vary depending on your SimpliSafe camera.

Here are the steps to hard reset your SimpliSafe camera:

  1. Remove your camera from the base station by unplugging it.
  2. Go to your SimpliSafe camera and remove its back panel cover.
  3. Remove all of the batteries inside and wait for 30 seconds before reinserting them again

Alternatively, if your SimpliSafe camera has a reset button, press and hold it for at least 20 seconds until its lights start flashing.

You will know the reset was successful if your camera initiates the setup process when connected to your SimpliSafe app.

Note: Doing so will erase any saved user settings on your camera and base station. A complete reconfiguration is due after this step.

It might be that the solutions above were insufficient, and your camera’s problem still persists.
