How to Fix When SimpliSafe Doorbell Not Charging?
We’ve prepared several solutions to help you diagnose and resolve the SimpliSafe doorbell charging problem.
Tip: We recommend following the steps to troubleshoot the issue effectively.
1. Power Reset SimpliSafe Doorbell
Power outages in your household would be the most possible reason your SimpliSafe doorbell is not charging.
In that case, a simple power reset will be enough to restore the power voltage and address the charging issues in a matter of minutes, so to begin, let’s give it a power cycle!
To power reset the SimpliSafe doorbell:
- Remove the doorbell from the charging mount.
- Locate the large button at the doorbell’s back.
- Press the button on the back for ∼10 seconds.
- Release the button and wait for a blinking light.
The doorbell has now been rebooted.
When you’re ready, reinstall your SimpliSafe doorbell on its mounting plate and let it charge for a few minutes. If the issue is still there, continue reading.
2. Remove and Re-insert the Batteries
Note: This method only applies to SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro.
The SimpliSafe doorbell has a battery, which cannot keep the device powered for an extended period.
Therefore, the doorbell is mainly designed to be wired to the primary A/C source.
If everything seems fine, but the SimpliSafe doorbell is not charging, you may need to reinsert the battery and refresh the charge.
To re-insert the SimpliSafe doorbell batteries:
- Insert the screwdriver into the hole underneath.
- Remove the doorbell from the charging mount.
- Then, take out the batteries from your doorbell.
- Clean the battery contacts and put the batteries in.
- Then, reinstall the doorbell back on its mounting.
Tip: Try charging the doorbell while continuing to read the following solutions!
3. Power Cycle the Doorbell via Breaker
If your SimpliSafe doorbell is not charging correctly after a power outage, performing a power cycle via breakers will be an ideal fix.
This will help discharge the residual electricity and resolve technical issues preventing your SimpliSafe doorbell from charging.
Here are the steps to power cycle your doorbell via breaker:
- Locate the circuit breaker that powers the doorbell.
- Then, flip over the breaker to turn “OFF” the power.
- Wait for about 60 seconds for the complete discharge.
- Flip up the breaker to turn on the A/C to the doorbell.
After you’re done, wait about 15 minutes and check if the doorbell is charging.
If your doorbell is still not charging, the power in your home is likely insufficient.
Perhaps power fluctuations are in place after a power outage, so we recommend checking whether the lights are weak/flickering.
Note: In case of power efficiency in your home, avoid using electrical appliances!
4. Check for Faulty Wiring Connection
The next obvious thing you should check is your SimpliSafe doorbell’s wiring connection.
Check if the wiring is established correctly and if there are any problems.
You should focus on locating any damaged or loose wires, which can help you determine why your doorbell is not charging.
This will help you know if the power source works as it should and help you identify additional issues that may later affect your doorbell.
To check your SimpliSafe doorbell wiring:
- Turn off the power to the doorbell at the breaker.
- Slide the doorbell down the mounting bracket.
- Inspect the wires for any visible damage or wear.
- Ensure they are securely snug to the terminals.
Ensure your existing wiring meets SimpliSafe doorbell power requirements, including voltage and transformer compatibility, which is 8-24VAC.
Replacing damaged wires is only possible while the power from the main circuit is disabled, as touching live wires can result in an injury.
Tip: We recommend getting professional help if you’re unfamiliar with the doorbell wiring!
5. Replace SimpliSafe Doorbell Batteries
Your SimpliSafe doorbell is designed to be powered by mount wiring and not with batteries.
However, there are cases when depleted or malfunctioning batteries can impact the doorbell charging capability.
So, it’s essential to ensure that the batteries in the doorbell are working.
To rule this possibility out, you may need to replace the batteries. To do this, you should first disconnect the power to the doorbell.
Then, remove the doorbell from the charging mount and replace the batteries.
After replacing the battery, turn on the power to your doorbell and let the doorbell charge.
If the issue persists, continue with the steps below…
Note: This method only applies to SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro.
6. Factory Reset the SimpliSafe Doorbell
There are cases when the SimpliSafe doorbell gets sufficient power voltage, but an underlying software glitch prevents it from charging.
In that case, resetting the doorbell will help, as doing so will clear any underlying software-related issues that prevent it from functioning correctly.
To factory reset your SimpliSafe doorbell:
- Disconnect the doorbell power at the breaker.
- Remove the doorbell from the charging mount.
- On the doorbell, locate the small reset button.
- Hold down the reset button for ∼15 seconds.
- Release the button when hearing the chirping.
Your SimpliSafe doorbell will go from blue to yellow to blinking white light, indicating that the device is now reset to factory default.
Then, you would need to carry out the initialization and set up your doorbell from scratch.
When ready, you can test whether your doorbell is now charting.
Note: After the factory reset, any customized settings will be permanently erased!
7. Reposition Your SimpliSafe Doorbell
If your doorbell is placed in an area with a weak Wi-Fi signal or exposed to extreme weather conditions, these factors may affect its ability to charge consistently.
The solution is simply to consider moving it to a spot with better connectivity and protection, which may turn out to be the solution.
To reposition, find a location closer to your Wi-Fi router and shielded from direct sunlight, rain, or extreme temperatures.
Once you’ve found a suitable spot, relocate the doorbell accordingly and test whether the device’s charging will now resume.
If yes, keep your doorbell at the new spot.
Note: A simple doorbell relocation can enhance the overall performance, ensuring a stable and reliable charging experience.
8. Replace Your Electrical Transformer
If you’ve reached this step and your SimpliSafe doorbell is still not charging, you may consider replacing the transformer.
The transformer is essential for providing the correct power supply to your doorbell, and its issues could impact the doorbell’s functionality and, mostly, its charging.
Here are the steps to replace your transformer:
- Buy a compatible transformer with the following:
- Voltage rating between= 16V AC – 24V AC
- Current rating between = 10VA – 40VA
- Disconnect the doorbell power at the breaker box.
- Unscrew and remove the cover of the transformer.
- Disconnect it from its wires and the mounting.
- Then, connect the wiring to your new transformer.
- Next, mount the new transformer in a safe location.
- Lastly, turn on the power to the doorbell and check.
If nothing works out for you, there might be internal hardware damage to your doorbell that requires professional help.
